Two years ago, Nick Lowe had almost convinced himself that his days of making records were over. As detailed in a lengthy retrospective feature in Rolling Stone this past December, Lowe had ridden into 2018 astride a storied forty-plus year career as an artist, producer and one of the most-revered songwriters of his generation. But suddenly, the affable rocker-next-door felt he had to step back to take stock of his situation.
Party of Four features two unreleased tracks and two demos from the Party of One sessions, showing Nick's recording process at the time. "You Stabbed Me in the Front" and "Rocket Coast" could've fit perfectly on the album, showcasing Nick's unrivaled wit and razor-sharp songwriting. The demo for “Rocky Road” shows an early example of how the studio cut came to be, and the demo for "Don't Think About Her" would later become fully realized when Little Village, Nick's supergroup with Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Jim Keltner, released their self-titled album in 1992.
Nick Lowe is back and has re-discovered his rockin' side on his first new release in half a decade. Tokyo Bay/Crying Inside is a four song EP featuring two Nick originals, the shiprockin' "Tokyo Bay" and introspective "Crying Inside," plus covers of the Bee Gees' "Heartbreaker" and Cliff Richard's "Travellin' Light." Nick's recent tour mates, Los Straitjackets, are his backing band on this record, contributing to the sounds of Nick rocking his hardest in decades.
A Record Store Day release. It's 78 rpm!
