S’il fallait donner une définition au romantisme du début du XIXe siècle, la simple écoute de ce disque rendrait toutes autres explications superflues. Tout ce qui caractérise ce célèbre mouvement de pensée artistique et intellectuel est présent au sein de ces chef-d'œuvres du plus imprégné de ses compositeurs. On y trouve intimement mêlés la passion et l’amour mais aussi le doute et l’espoir sans oublier la poésie, puissante inspiratrice de l’œuvre de Schumann. Murray Perahia y brille de tout feux et ce n’est pas la prise de son qui me démentira. Le piano est d’une richesse harmonique qui nous laisse pantois. Des graves profonds et charpentés aux aiguës aériens et cristallins, l’instrument est restitué dans ses vraies dimensions. Ce disque est un condensé de ce qui se fait de mieux en la matière.

Soprano Claudine Ansermet and lutenist Paolo Cherici frequently appear on recording releases which Glossa Cabinet from time to time is putting out, and drawn from the now-disbanded Symphonia label. Here, the delightful chansons of Claude Le Jeune are interspersed with preludes, dances and fantasias for solo lute by figures such as Mertel, Perrichon and Adriaenssen. Le Jeune worked at the court of Henri IV before being succeeded by Pierre Guédron, and was one of the most prolific and significant composers of the second half of the 16th century, and one of the chief exponents of “musique mesurée à l’antique”.

This is an auspicious beginning to what one hopes will be a series of recordings of French opera made with the forces of the Bastille under Chung. Without doubt this is the most subtly and expertly conducted performance of this work to appear on CD, excellent as others have been in this respect, and also the best played and sung. Chung's achievement is to have welded the elements of pagan ruthlessness, erotic stimulation and Wagnerian harmony that comprise Saint-Saens's masterpiece into a convincing whole.
