This is a great collection of The 5th Dimension on 3 CDs. It would have easily fit on 2 CDs but I guess it was a marketing scheme to make people think they were getting more for their money. Nonetheless, it is still a great collection and features some tracks you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. The fans of this group will not want to miss this one.

Zephyr Quartet's new release, EPILOGUE, betrays expectations in the best manner possible. Listeners expecting to hear traditional (or even contemporary) classical music from this Australian string quartet will be in for a big surprise when they find tracks that resemble those of wait for it a great modern pop or rock group instead. But there is more: the immediate accessibility of their music almost instantly reveals a great depth, profundity and musical richness, to the point where it will find only few rivals in contemporary composition.

Although I Puritani was performed during the Metropolitan Opera's first season in 1883, it had not been seen there for decades until this production by Sandro Sequi was unveiled in 1976. It was one of the greatest triumphs for the partnership of Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti, and it is to the credit of all concerned in this recent revival that one soon forgets names from the past and enjoys what is a spirited attempt to evoke mid-19th-century style.

The Beatles - Indian Rope Trick (The Echoes Of A Dream) (1977)  Music

Indian Rope Trick was a Beatles bootleg album released around 1977. For me, it was one of the first Beatles bootlegs I purchased back then and it excited me to no end, it was released on a number of different labels: Dragonfly, Ruthless Rhymes Ltd., and Fan. We now know this album was one of the first to feature "outfakes", or outtakes that are fake. Some of the songs that are on here as exclusive are nothing more than the left or right channel of the song to make them sound "new". Some songs listed as Beatles songs do not feature any Beatle members on it. Nonetheless, Indian Rope Trick excited many Beatles fans despite the actual disappointments. This is taken from a 2014 Remasters Workshop CD, funny since the quality is equal to the original 1977 records.
Peter Green Splinter Group - Reaching The Cold 100 (2003) (bonus EP) [Proper REPOST]

Reaching the Cold 100 is the final Peter Green Splinter Group recording. It is polished, warm-toned British blues-rock in a mode that literally puts anything Eric Clapton's done in the last 20 years to shame. Peter Stroud, Nigel Watson and Roger Cotton composed most of the material here separately; yet they have figured out a way to sound like a single songwriter reflecting Green's voice and musical persona. This record has a ton of spiritual themes attached to it, many of them spooky – and not in that clichéd way people have been imitating Robert Johnson in either.

Recordings of Tchaikovsky symphonies are appearing less frequently since the great major label implosion of a few years ago, and the upside is that we can once again approach new releases with interest, and even anticipation. Conductor Tugan Sokhiev’s light, sinewy reading gives the impression of a fresh approach to this warhorse work. He elicits bold if not particularly brazen sounds from the Toulouse orchestra brass in the dramatic opening and throughout the first movement–especially the close, where I was once again reminded that this is pretty scary music. He achieves this effect not only by energetic tempos, but also by highlighting the harmonic tension Tchaikovsky built into the score, and by taking great care with the music’s unique timbral characteristics (woodwinds in particular).

Although it's only a teaser for a forthcoming ten-CD set, the three-CD Solo box is a pretty comprehensive look at Freddie Mercury's less rock-oriented solo career. Mercury's two albums from the '80s, 1985's Mr. Bad Guy and 1988's Barcelona, are repackaged in their entirety as separate discs; there's also a third disc of rarities, including Mercury's pre-Queen solo single "I Can Hear Music" (recorded as Larry Lurex), his movie soundtrack contribution "Love Kills," and his non-LP U.K. hit cover of "The Great Pretender." In addition, the set has been remastered and comes with a 28-page booklet. ~Allmusic

Anyone who has seriously listened to Styx' dramatic, pomped-up pop/rock has an opinion about ex-frontman/ keyboardist Dennis DeYoung. Many think DDY was an essential part of Styx, citing his tremendous singing voice and sweet songwriting touch. Some, however, think that DDY was holding the band back a bit, restraining them from reclaiming their old rockin' edge. For those who longed for a more rockin' Styx, this live album is for you.
