Breathless (1960)

Breathless (1960) [The Criterion Collection #408]
A Film by Jean-Luc Godard
Full BluRay 1:1 | 1080p MPEG-4 AVC @ 27987 Kbps | 01:30:25 | 45,11 Gb
Audio: French LPCM 1.0 @ 1152 kbps | Subs: English
Genre: Crime, Drama, Romance | Nominated for BAFTA Film Award + Another 3 wins | France

The first feature film directed by Jean-Luc Godard and one of the seminal films of the French New Wave, Breathless is story of the love between Michel Poiccard, a small-time hood wanted for killing a cop, and Patricia Franchini, an American who sells the International Herald Tribune along the boulevards of Paris. Their relationship develops as Michel hides out from a dragnet. Breathless uses the famous techniques of the French New Wave: location shooting, improvised dialogue, and a loose narrative form. In addition Godard uses his characteristic jump cuts, deliberate "mismatches" between shots, and references to the history of cinema, art, and music. Much of the film's vigor comes from collisions between popular and high culture: Godard shows us pinups and portraits of women by Picasso and Renoir, and the soundtrack includes both Mozart's clarinet concerto and snippets of French pop radio. When Breathless was first released, audiences and critics responded to the burst of energy it gave the French cinema; it won numerous international awards and became an unexpected box-office sensation.

The Gospel According to St. Matthew (Colorized and BW, 1964)
A Film By Pier Paolo Pasolini
DVD9 (VIDEO_TS) | AR - 1.85:1 Anamorphic on Colorized; 4:3 on Original | 01:31:37 + 02:17:02 | 7,71 Gb
Audio: Colorized: English dub DD 2.0 without any subs and BW - Italian DD 2.0 with English subs
Genre: Drama, History, Biography | Nominated for 3 Oscars + 6 wins | Italy, France

Pasolini created the most enduring expression of the story of Jesus yet seen on the screen, before or since. 'The Gospel According to St. Matthew" makes most other representations on the medium of film seem like a pale and poor imitation. Perfect in so many senses that the director still had time to include his own political sensibilities into his marvelous visage of Christ. The acting was excellent, as is was the casting and the limited use of camera angles and effects shows a sparing humility to the ode this film was obviously paying homage to. How this same guy made 'Salo' is beyond me. The choice of music, although questionable by some, seems the pin-point counter balance juxtaposing the onscreen events… Billie Holliday to Bach. It all works like an extreme expression of love overflowing onto your awestruck gaze. This film may not be perfect in others eyes, but it was in mine.

The multifaceted, deeply personal dramatic universe of Eric Rohmer has had an effect on cinema unlike any other. One of the founding critics of the history-making Cahiers du cinema, Rohmer began translating his written manifestos to film in the sixties, standing apart from his New Wave contemporaries, like Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, with his patented brand of gently existential, hyperarticulate character studies set against vivid seasonal landscapes.
