Drame | France, Allemagne 1972 | Realisation Marin KARMITZ

The Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins (1962)
Seven directors each dramatize one of the seven deadly sins in a short film. In "Anger," a domestic argument over a fly in the Sunday soup escalates into nuclear war. In "Sloth," a movie star would rather pay someone to tie his shoe than bend over to do it himself, and he can't be bothered to accept a starlet's sexual favors. In "Gluttony," a peasant family on its way to the funeral of a relative who died from indigestion stops regularly to eat and drink en route, arriving in time to eat some more. In "Greed," a high-class prostitute refunds the price of a cadet's lottery ticket. In "Pride," an unfaithful wife finds reason to reform. And so on through lust and envy.

Geraldine Chaplin plays a woman determined to avenge the death of his brother at the hands of a band of espadachinas captained by veteran actress Bernadette Lafont Nouvelle Vague. Based on Cyril Tourneur drama "The Revenger's Tragedy", "Northwest Wind" also explores the limits of reflexivity in the astonishing climax of the film sequence. The production of the film was so exhausting that Rivette postponed the project for over twenty years.

Director: Peter Brook | Novel & Adaptation: Marguerite Duras | Country: France, Italy | Genre: Drama

Cast: Jeanne Moreau, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Pascale de Boysson, Jean Deschamps, Didier Haudepin

An atypical film for director Peter Brook, who has never been known for his concern for the emotional crises of the bourgeois, this adaptation of Marguerite Duras's novel might qualify him as an honorary member of the Nouvelle Vague. The film stars Jeanne Moreau as Anne Desbaredes, a wealthy, bored housewife who believes she has witnessed a murder in a quayside bistro. Rushing to the scene of the crime, she strikes up a conversation with Chauvin (Jean-Paul Belmondo), an employee of her husband who also saw the crime. The troubled woman continues to return to the café, increasingly identifying herself with the murder victim and becoming obsessed with Chauvin..

Jean-Luc Godard - Week End (1967)

One of the world's most influential filmmakers and a leading figure of the Nouvelle Vague movement of the 60's, Jean-Luc Godard's works have transformed the face of cinema. 'Weekend' remains one of the most legendary, audacious and acclaimed films of his distinguished career. It follows a brickering, scheming bourgeois couple who leave Paris for the French countryside to claim an inheritence by nefarious means. Almost immediately, they become entangled in a cataclysmic traffic jam, which is just the beginning of a journey fraught with violent and dangerous encounters : rape, murder, pillage and even cannibalism. Famed for its virtuoso cinematography -including a stunning ten-minute tracking shot- Godard's dystopian road movie is a ferocious attack on consumerism. (– DVD Cover)
