Bonnie Parker is bored with life and wants a change. She gets her chance when she meets a charming young drifter by the name of Clyde Barrow. They rob small banks with skill and panache, soon becoming minor celebrities known across the country. People are proud to have been held up by Bonnie and Clyde; to their victims, the duo is doing what nobody else has the guts to do. To the law, the two are evil bank robbers who deserve to be gunned down where they stand.

Monsieur Sauvage returns to his home town, having left 20 years earlier following an incident in which he was shot by a friend, a rival for the woman he loved. He meets his former girlfriend, Genevieve, and finds that there is still a mutual attraction. Meanwhile, Sauvage’s old friend is having financial problems with his firm, and the only way out is for his son to marry a wealthy heiress. However, the son, Francois has joined Sauvage’s company as a set designer and he soon becomes infatuated with a ballet dancer. Sauvage is far from reluctant to intervene to help out his former "friend"…

Anne Goupil is a literature student in Paris in 1957. Her elder brother, Pierre, takes her to a friend's party where the guests include Philip Kaufman, an expatriate American escaping McCarthyism, and Gerard Lenz, a theatre director who arrives with the mysterious woman Terry. The talk at the party is about the apparent suicide of their friend Juan, a Spanish activist who had recently broken up with Terry. Philip warns Anne that the forces that killed Juan will soon do the same to Gerard. Gerard is trying to rehearse Shakespeare's "Pericles", although he has no financial backing. Anne takes a part in the play to help Gerard, and to try to discover why Juan died.
