Described as the Swedish answer to the Pierces, sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg, aka First Aid Kit, blend autumnal folk and wistful '60s Americana, and have gathered a pretty illustrious following since their cover version of Fleet Foxes' "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" became a YouTube hit back in 2008. As well as releasing their debut single through the Knife's Rabid Records label, they have since made Patti Smith cry with their rendition of her 1979 single "Dancing Barefoot," been courted by Jack White, who invited them to appear on two tracks for his Third Man Records' Blue Series, and now find themselves under the guidance of producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes) for their second album, The Lion's Roar. It's an impressive turn of events for a duo that hails from a small suburb of Stockholm, but the follow-up to 2010's The Big Black & the Blue reveals why First Aid Kit have attracted so much attention. Juxtaposing the girls' glorious ethereal harmonies with a genuine sense of melancholy, the bittersweet alt-country of "Emmylou," a tribute to the musical partnerships of Ms. Harris and Gram Parsons, and Johnny Cash and June Carter; the twinkling Mama Cass-esque "Blue"; and the lush acoustics of "I Found a Way" are all beautifully heartbreaking.

Like the film itself, the soundtrack to Miami Vice is no 1980s retro-ride. Sure, it opens with "In the Air Tonight," but it's a cover by nü metal band Nonpoint taken from their 2004 album Recoil. Director Michael Mann's slick revisionist aesthetics are confirmed on two types of tracks. First, there are the dancefloor-friendly ones like "One of These Mornings" (a collaboration between Moby and Patti Labelle) and a house remix of Nina Simone’s "Sinnerman" by Felix da Housecat. Then there are the more atmospheric offerings, such as a couple instrumentals by Scottish band Mogwai and the last four tracks, that suggest the kind of steel-blue ambiance Mann is so good at creating (especially John Murphy's "Mercado Nueva" and Klaus Badelt & Mark Batson's "A-500"). Odder is the lack of local flavor: there's only a pair of Latin-flavored tracks, Arranca and Emilio Estefan, for instance. Not to mention that if ever there was a soundtrack that should have included at least one Miami bass song, it's this one. As for those who still associate Miami Vice with pastel colors and the 1980s, they're better off checking out the soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City–a video game that's actually more faithful to the spirit of the TV series than the movie that bears its name. –Elisabeth Vincentelli

Unfortunately, Vale IS not a concept album about the Welsh valleys, but it is a flamboyant mixture of classic Black Veil Brides and frontman Andy Biersack’s pop persona. The Last One and Wake Up kick things off with some fist-pumping choruses, plenty of ‘Woahs’ and ‘Heys’, and some flamboyant guitar solos, continuing the trend of the purposefully overblown pomp Black Veil Brides have cultivated. Andy might not be the most inventive lyricist – some of his rhyming couplets are fairly clichéd – but the production, like the undulating strings in the background of When They Call My Name, and a stuttering synthon_Dead Man Walking_, makes the songs sound stirring despite their apparent lack of introspection.

Classical, Vocal | Label: Supraphon

The mezzo-soprano Dagmar Pecková is giving a very personal gift in the form of this Christmas album. The listener is treated to Bohemian and Moravian carols and to the tender poetry of Christmas songs from seventeenth-century Bohemian Baroque hymnals (Michna's Chtíc, aby spat is included in the collection, naturally). Dagmar Pecková has, of course, also turned her gaze beyond the hills on her homeland's borders. Ultimately, whether it is carp or turkey on the festive dinner table, it is the birth of the Saviour that is celebrated all over Europe. Good King Wenceslas is sung in England and Lulajże Jezuniu in Poland, while Stille Nacht and Adeste fideles are sung in many places in a variety of translations. But what about in Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, or Italy? The musical treasures of those countries are found here as well.

The first (and best) volume of a 4CD BoxSet series with relaxing and chillout vocal jazz hits, in their original recordings. The interesting and beautiful feature of these series, is the combination of classical jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald with today's Nu-Jazz stars, in the same collection. The result is a delightful musical experience. Enjoy.
