Punk rock's poet laureate Patti Smith ranks among the most influential female rock & rollers of all time. Ambitious, unconventional, and challenging, Smith's music was hailed as the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since Bob Dylan's heyday. If that hybrid remained distinctly uncommercial for much of her career, it wasn't a statement against accessibility so much as the simple fact that Smith followed her own muse wherever it took her – from structured rock songs to free-form experimentalism, or even completely out of music at times.

Live recording from various venues in 1978-79 that captures the band in full flight

In the Midwest during the 1970s, you would be hard-pressed to find a rock group with a more impressive pedigree than Sonic's Rendezvous Band, which brought together members of four key bands from the fabled Detroit/Ann Arbor rock scene of the late '60s – Fred "Sonic" Smith of the MC5, Scott Morgan of the Rationals, Gary Rasmussen of the Up, and Scott Asheton of the Stooges. Among fans of high-energy Michigan rock, Sonic's Rendezvous Band would – with the passage of time – become nearly as legendary as their forebears, but it would be years before listeners outside of the Midwest had much of a chance to hear their music; fate seemed to conspire against them while they were together, and one of the most talented and powerful acts of its day ended up releasing only a one-song single during its six-year lifespan.

A sumptuous two-disc set that brings together all three of Patti's albums for the Philadelphia International label from the 1980s. The Spirit's In It from 1981 features stellar performances of the title track, "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu," "Here You Come Again," and a powerful recut of "Over the Rainbow." Patti's second album, 1983's I'm In Love Again, spills across both discs, with the title track and a nice reading of "Lover Man" being the highlights. This anthology finishes out with 1985's Patti, an album of leftovers which nonetheless sports strong material in Bobby Womack's "Love Symphony," Gamble and Huff's "If You Don't Know Me By Now," "Shy," and the standard "Look to the Rainbow." An interesting chapter in this soul diva's career.
