"To describe Obrecht's Missa Maria zart (Mass for Gentle Mary) as a 'great work' is true in two respects. It is a masterpiece of sustained and largely abstract musical thought; and it is possibly the longest polyphonic setting of the Mass Ordinary ever written, over twice the length of the more standard examples by Palestrina and Josquin. How it was possible for Obrecht to conceive something so completely outside the normal experience of his time is one of the most fascinating riddles in Renaissance music…"

"As our awards enter their fourth decade, we've paused and looked back over the first 30 years. It's gratifying to see how many of the recordings singled out for the prestigious Record of the Year have gone on to become classics of the catalogue. (…) Then there are the discs that shaped careers - violinists Nigel Kennedy (in Elgar) and Maxim Vengerov (in Prokofiev and Shostakovich) - to which you might add The Tallis Scholars' stunning disc of Masses by Josquin Desprez, a disc that elevated Early Music to the "mainstream". ~Grammophone

1984 is an album by Anthony Phillips released in 1981. It is an instrumental electronic album with some vocal effects and a variety of percussion. The album cover features a picture of a small cage, which is presumably a reference to the cage affixed to Winston's face in Nineteen Eighty-Four. This was the first Anthony Phillips album for which Peter Cross did not create the cover artwork. The liner notes include the line "Peter Cross is on holiday with Ralph Bernascone", which is part of a running joke in which "Ralph Bernascone" is mentioned in the liner notes of several of Anthony Phillips' albums. A remastered 2CD version of the album was released in Japan by Arcangelo Records in July 2007 as a limited edition mini-vinyl sleeve. A standard jewel case version was released in the UK by Voiceprint Records in June 2008. more…

The Origin is Peter Henry Phillips’ first opus. After collaborating with many popular singer-songwriters such as Ariane Moffatt and DJ Champion, Pierre-Philippe “Pilou” Côté experiments with pop-folk sonorities and proposes an album embedded with introspection, joy and well-being. Peter Henry Phillips is first and foremost a talented multi-instrumentalist and has accompanied artists such as Ariane Moffatt, Jorane, Elisapie Isaac, Tomas Jensen and Navet Confit. He has been part of the group Mimosa, who won first place at the Francouvertes, and has co-founded the group Elektrik Bones. In addition, DJ Champion recruited the singer for his album Resistance. Peter has participated in many recordings of the tracks, including the radio hit Alive Again. The singer also had weekly performances on the TV show Belle et Bum to interpret classic hits.

Although they were never major influences, both Flip Phillips and Charlie Ventura had their moments of fame and were entertaining and hard-swinging tenor saxophonists. This 1998 limited-edition six-CD box set from Mosaic is typically wondrous with quite a few little-heard gems included among the 116 selections (five previously unreleased, three of which are alternate takes). The first two CDs feature Charlie Ventura during 1951-1954, right after his "Bop for the People" band broke up.

"Few things are as satisfying to a choral music fan as spending an hour or two listening to the Tallis Scholars sing the music of William Byrd. A speciality of this ensemble for more than two decades, Byrd's masses, motets, and anthems are among the greatest sacred choral works of Elizabethan England–and thus the late Renaissance–and their beauty and complexity always seem to inspire these singers to a level of expressive effect that most other choirs never achieve…" ~classicstoday

One of the most noted groups in the world of Renaissance music, the Tallis Scholars bring us a compilation of their work from 1980-1998. "The Essential Talllis Scholars," a two CD set, gives us an introduction to the vast amounts of music from this period and their discography. Disc 1 contains motets by such composers as Palestrina, Josquin and Lassus. The opening piece is the incomparably gorgeous "Miserere" by Allegri, which should be in everybody's library. Disc 2 is comprised of works by English composers, such as Tallis and includes Byrd's "Mass for 5 Voices." If you are new to the works of the Tallis Scholars or to the world of Renaissance music, this is a great place to start.

Dragonfly Dreams is the ninth installment in Anthony Phillips' very popular Private Parts and Pieces series. Once again Anthony has teamed up with Enrique Berro Garcia on five of the tracks. Anthony Phillips was one of the founding members of Genesis, having attended the Charterhouse School in Surrey with Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford. Phillips and Rutherford (who had played together in another band before linking up with Gabriel and Banks), were the principal composing members of Genesis during their formative years, right into their first recording venture on… Amazon.com

The definitive edition of the 1977 seminal debut solo album by GENESIS founding member ANTHONY PHILLIPS, The Geese and the Ghost. The music album could arguably be seen to have begun life as far back as 1969, but in essence it was the result of nearly four years hard work by Anthony, in collaboration with MIKE RUTHERFORD (who co-wrote three of the pieces on the record), beginning with a series of recordings made on TEAC 4 track tape recorders, progressing to sessions on the barge studio of engineer Tom Newman. Enlisting the assistance of PHIL COLLINS, JOHN HACKETT, VIV McAULIFFE, JACK LANCASTER and many others, The Geese and the Ghost finally appeared in 1977 in America on the Passport label and in the UK on the Hit & Run imprint.

Digitally re-mastered edition of this 1976 release, the 12th album from the enigmatic singer/songwriter. Shawn Phillips has recorded 20 albums and worked with musicians including Donovan, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Bernie Taupin and many others. Shawn's seminal release was Second Contribution, but Rumplestiltskin's Resolve is rated by the fans as the high point in his musical career. In the 1960's, Phillips played on several Donovan albums, performed at the Isle of Wight festival, sang on the Beatles' "Lovely Rita", and was cast to play the lead in the original production of Jesus Christ Superstar (he had to withdraw due to his heavy recording and touring schedule).
