Philip Glass’ score to the film NEVERWAS is the fourth release from the Philip Glass Recording Archive. Neverwas, a film starring Ian McKellen, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Nolte, Brittany Murphy, Jessica Lange and William Hurt , is a fantasy-mystery with a bold, playful and fantastical score by Philip Glass. Neverwas never received wide distribution and was largely forgotten. The 53 minute Glass score possesses some of Glass most accessible and heartfelt music.
The Juniper Tree is an opera composed by Philip Glass and Robert Moran with a libretto by Arthur Yorinks, and is based on the tale by the Brothers Grimm. The opera was first produced in 1985 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge Massachusetts.
This very grim story of death, rebirth, and love is accompanied by wonderful music. This collaboration between composers Philip Glass and Robert Moran yielded an incredibly lyrical and compelling score
We found a recording of 13 Melodies for Solo Saxophone when we were building the Philip Glass recording archive. As I listened to this wonderful recording of Andrew Sterman's performances, I was struck by the beautiful simplicity and purity of these compositions, they seemed to portray the very essence of much of Philip Glass' music. I knew that this particular recording was made as 'incidental' music for Joanne Akalaitis' Theatrical production of Jean Genet's Prisoner Of Love in 1995, but upon further research I found that the Melodies were actually a sketch book for the Saxophone Concerto which was commissioned by the world renowned Rascher Saxophone Quartet.
Orange Mountain Music’s new release of “Philip Glass – ANALOG” contains three seminal works in Glass’s musical history. In the late 1970’s, Philip Glass was asked by two film producers, François de Menil and Barbara Rose, to write music for a film they were producing. The film was “Mark di Suvero, Sculptor” and it was Glass’s first film score, predating even Koyaanisqatsi. The score took its titles from the names of di Suvero sculptures shown in the film, including Etoile Polaire (North Star) and others. Dressed like an Egg is a never before released early Glass score which was written as incidental music to a Mabou Mines Theater Company production in 1977.
Orange Mountain Music presents a new studio recording of Philip Glass's Fifth Symphony performed by Trinity Wall Street, Novus NY, Trinity Youth Chorus, and a remarkable group of soloists in a new recording celebrating the 20th anniversary of the piece which premiered on 28 August 1999 at the Salzburg Festival as part of the celebrations around the Millennium. At 100 minutes long, Glass's Fifth Symphony is his magnum symphonic opus. The piece reflects a journey of human experiences through texts of the world's various "Wisdom Traditions" (religions).
Working on a new album with composer Philip Glass is a dream collaboration for Brisbane-based musician Tenzin Choegyal. Choegyal, who came to Australia as a refugee, has made a name for himself as a bit of a world music star. His friendship and collaborations with revered American composer Philip Glass has been a meaningful journey together. Glass, now 88, is a Tibetan Buddhist, like Choegyal, although Glass is more devout and spiritually accomplished, insists Choegyal.
