Anne-Sophie Mutter's Bartók Second is clearly one of the best around. The first movement is a difficult piece to bring off, if only because the beginning is so simple and tuneful compared to later developments. Mutter proves an excellent guide to the music's ongoing development, never losing site of that folk-like opening and always returning to it as if to say, "See, it was there all along!"

« Tout est posé avec un tact idéal, les couleurs varient avec une justesse dont on craignait qu’elle ne fût perdue dans la mélodie française. » Sylvain Fort / CHOC Classica
« La voix est pleine et souple, l’émission vocale superbement contrôlée, la diction soignée. Mais, et c’est le grand atout du disque, cet instrument remarquable fait jeu égal avec ceux de l’ensemble Contraste. » fff Télérama

The title of this short album "Fais Que Ton Rêve Soit Plus Long Que La Nuit" translates as "make your dream last longer than the night". It is sub-titled "Poème Symphonique" which in turn refers to a genre of composition created by Franz Liszt in his mid 19th-century Weimar years, also taken up by Dvorak late in life and as a music form perfected by Richard Strauss before switching to opera. Unlike earlier genres, it had no fixed form or duration and was basically a vehicle for expressing some extra-musical idea or event, usually from the world of heroic literature, without using actual texts as in opera.

About Bruno Coulais
Born in 1954, Bruno Coulais is a French born film and television soundtrack composer whose first full-length work appeared in 1986 – the score for the Sebastien Grall film La Femme Secrete. He kept to the television end of film scoring and composition for the next few years, and in 1996 he was to earn his first big marks for his work on the documentary Microcosmos, which won him the 1997 Cesar Award. With this success in tow, Coulais went on to the big screen, and some of the most popular French movies over the next few years featured his work, including the 2001 world-wide hit, Winged Migration. After this brief – and successful – foray into cinematics, Coulais went off on his own, composing a children's opera, and delving into collaborative efforts with Akhentaon and A Filetta. But films and television were not left behind completely, and by 2008 – the year of Coulais' soundtrack to the film MR 73 – Coulais added another 13 or so credits to his résumé. More followed in the coming years, including soundtracks for 2010's documentary Babies and Jean-Paul Salomé's drama The Chameleon in the same year. ~ Chris True

A talented pianist with a style diverse enough to fit into swing, bop, and more adventurous settings, Roland Hanna was one of the last in an impressive line of great pianists who emerged in Detroit after World War II (including Hank Jones, Barry Harris, and Tommy Flanagan). After serving in the Army and studying music at Eastman and Juilliard, Hanna made a strong impression playing with Benny Goodman (1958). He worked with Charles Mingus for a period in 1959, and went on to generally lead his own trios. Hanna was an integral part of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra (1967-1974), and in 1974 helped found the New York Jazz Quartet (with Frank Wess).
