The third Steeleye Span album, Ten Man Mop opens with possibly the most beautifully sung number of their entire history, "Gower Wassail," which also makes a very strong case for the use of electric guitars in a traditional folk setting. "Paddy Clancy's Jig/Four Nights Drunk" was the group's first great electric adaptation of traditional dance, None of the rest is quite that good, highlighted by Maddy Prior's haunting performance on "When I Was on Horseback" (although the song drones on a little too long at six-and-a-half minutes), the delightful "Marrowbones," the riveting "Stewball," and the rousing reels "Dowd's Favourite," "£10 Float," and "The Morning Dew."

A varied album, with different band members dominating on different tracks. Alison Gross showed Bob's increasingly effective use of rock techniques; Rick and Pete duetted on Robbery With Violins, and Pete and Bob were responsible for Hares on the Mountain, which they had sung together in their folk club days. Maddy suggested The Weaver and the Factory Maid, Tim brought in The Bold Poachers, while Rogues in a Nation and Cam Ye O'er Frae France had been worked out by the band as a whole as part of [the stage play] Kidnapped. Rick played drums on The Wee Wee Man and Cam Ye O'er Frae France.

Please To See The King is the second album by Steeleye Span, released in 1971. A substantial personnel change following their previous effort, Hark! The Village Wait, brought about a substantial change in their overall sound, including a lack of drums and the replacement of one female vocalist with a male vocalist. Musically, this was their most electric, dense recording, with loud guitars, strong looping bass lines and no drums.

`Cogs, Wheels and Lovers' is their 21st studio album in 40 years and the music is better than ever. No newly written material this time but only `Steeleye-interpretations' of classic Folk songs. It is the thing they do best and it was their original concept when they recorded their first album `Hark! The Village Wait' in 1969.

The biggest selling of all Steeleye Span albums is also their hardest rocking record. They sound like would-be competitors to the Who on the opening bars of "The Wife of Usher's Well," with Bob Johnson's electric guitar grinding out power chords like nobody's business. The vocals have their usual elegance, the harmonies soaring exquisitely, but between the choruses the guitar puts out lots of wattage.

With 63 tracks and a total running time of just under four hours, Dust On The Nettles examines the metamorphosis that British folk underwent during the late 1960s, when the influence of psychedelia and the counterculture saw the idiom being twisted into all kinds of new and exotic shapes, as the finger-in-the-ear folk clubs of yore were inexorably drawn into a brave new world of Arts Labs, free festivals and the nascent college/university circuit.
