The Corrs step back into the limelight with their stunning 2015 album "White Light". Having sold over 40 million albums, White Light is their first studio record in over a decade. The album features 12 brand new songs that exquisitely mix that endearing, classic Corrs sound with modern pop and traditional Irish folk music. Highlights are many and include the gently political 'Ellis Island', a song already praised by Bono; and the evocative 'Gerry's Reel', an instrumental dedicated to their late father, Gerry Corr who sadly passed away earlier this year.

In a culture obsessed with content, saturation, and continual exposure, it’s rare to find artists who prefer to lurk outside of the public eye. Thomas Pynchon is perhaps the most notable contemporary recluse—a virtually faceless figure who occasionally creeps out of hiding to offer up an elaborate novel steeped in history and warped by imagination—but for crate diggers and guitar mystics, Sweden’s enigmatic GOAT may qualify as the greatest modern pop-culture mystery.

The voice of the singer is soft, pleasant and untalented in classical sense, though she hits to the key well and I Iike her voice really much. The singing is present only in more calmer moments of the songs, so the band gets much instrumental space to hit the harder acid rock gear on, and the do it very well. The compositions are quite simple, more like basic frames for free playing…

Galliard were in on the ground floor of the British progressive rock movement, releasing their debut album, Strange Pleasure, in 1969 and mixing jazz, rock, folk, and psychedelic influences. The following year, New Dawn pretty much picked up where its predecessor left off, with one key exception: a whole brace of additional horn players had been brought in to augment the sound. The striking thing is just how good Galliard were at all of the varied styles they attempt on New Dawn, but sadly, it was to be their last album.

Written over the course of 2016 and 2017 and recorded in the summer of the latter year by Frances Quinlan (songwriter/vocalist/rhythm guitar), Tyler Long (bass), Joe Reinhart (guitar), and Mark Quinlan (drums), Bark Your Head Off, Dog addresses disappointment, particularly in mans misuse of power, and relates accounts from the periphery – ones attempts to retreat from the lengthening shadows of tyrants, both historical and everyday. It considers what its like to cast off longheld and misguided perceptions, yet without the assurance of knowing what new ones will replace them. Much like on Hop Alongs first and second records, Get Disowned and Painted Shut, Quinlan seeks in real time to work through these issues.

Vialka is a French avant-progressive band in the Rock in Opposition vein. Their music is a great mixture of genres and influences such as folk, rock, punk (in their musical "attitude", mostly) and Balkan music, notably. Formed in 2002, Vialka consists of Marylise Frecheville and Éric Boros…

It had been a decade since the world last heard from the Corrs. In the ten years after the turn of the millennium, the sonic landscape – which had been favorable to the sibling quartet's soothing grown-up music – changed. Adult contemporary wasn't as clearly defined, considering Adele, Eminem, and Muse could all be heard on the same radio stations. And so with their sixth album, White Light, the Corrs stuck with the same reliable formula that served them so well in Europe for much of the early aughts. Straightforward, yearning, and honey-hooked, their comeback is a pleasing collection of pop/rock with their signature Irish folk elements woven throughout.

Rhino's five-disc box set Respect: A Century of Women in Music was surely assembled with the best of intentions, but it doesn't quite work. First of all, any collection that focuses solely on "the female contribution" comes off as a little condescending, no matter how good the intentions are. Still, the concept has enough weight to make for at least an interesting listen. However, any compilation that spans nearly 100 years and every conceivable popular musical genre is bound not only to be incomplete, but too sweeping to be totally effective. The scope is impressive, as are the featured artists – think of any major female musician and they're likely to be here, unless it's Joni Mitchell (Kim Gordon and Kim Deal are also missing, as are several other similarly minded post-punk rockers and various pop and folk singer/songwriters, but no omission is as shocking as Mitchell's) – but the overall effect is somewhat bewildering.

Spirogyra are a British folk/prog band that recorded three albums between 1971 and 1973. This third album of Spirogyra is in many ways their most progressive – flutes, trumpets, cellos, treated vocals, and long instrumental sections. And of course, there is the lovely, sultry voice of hippy dream-girl Barbara Gaskin.
