Set in the beach community of East Hampton, New York, one pivotal summer in the lives of famous children's books author Ted Cole and his beautiful wife Marion is chronicled. Their once-great marriage has been strained by tragedy. The Coles lovingly parent their surviving child, bright 4-year-old Ruth, who takes everything in stride as perhaps only a child can. Upon entering high school, two best friends named Hana and Alice notice a boy a year older them while waiting for the train, and they both develop a pretty strong crush on him.
