Smooth soul singer Lew Kirton was born in Barbados and grew up singing in his church choir; he later performed with island vocal groups as Jiggs Kirton. Also an accomplished drummer, he later moved to the United States and took over the drum chair in Sam & Dave's touring revue in 1969. He joined the Philly-styled soul group the Invitations in 1972 as lead vocalist, and they attracted some attention with singles like "They Say the Girl's Crazy" and "Look on the Good Side." Kirton went solo in the late '70s, signing with the Miami-based TK label family (best known for hits by George and Gwen McCrae) in 1977. Teamed with writer/producer Clarence Reid (whose alter ego was, of course, the bawdy comedian Blowfly), his first releases on the Marlin subsidiary included the future collector's item "Do What You Want, Be What You Are." 1978 saw the single release of his best-known song, "Heaven in the Afternoon".

Rhino's fine 16-track collection Used Songs (1973-1980) chronicles Tom Waits' first seven albums, all recorded for Asylum Records. This contains pretty much all his staples from the '70s – "Heartattack and Vine," "Burma Shave," "Ol' 55," "Jersey Girl," "(Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night," and "Tom Traubert's Blues" among them – sequenced not chronologically, but sequenced for maximum impact. Given the sheer amount of music Waits made for Asylum, it shouldn't be surprising that there are some fan favorites missing, but there are no complaints with what is here, and this provides a near-perfect encapsulation of his pre-Island years, especially for those only familiar with the Island recordings.

Released on the Island Records subsidiary Mango in July 1980, Sinsemilla, named after a type of marijuana, was Black Uhuru's first album to be issued internationally, their third overall. Although the group was nominally a trio at this point – consisting of Derrick "Duckie" Simpson, Michael Rose, and Sandra "Puma" Jones – in effect, Sinsemilla was a solo album by Rose, who wrote all the songs and sang lead vocals.

Sooner or later labels should just get real. This is not the "best of" Tom Scott. It's just the best of Tom Scott on Columbia. It's the Impulse recordings, the Warner recordings, and the GRP recordings to boot that would really make a representative best-of. To be fair, when this was issued, there wasn't a lot of cross-licensing going on in the music biz, though there is some here. Since it was issued, much consolidation has occurred, and, strangely enough, there has been a lot more cooperation. Perhaps they are all going to become one large conglomerate one day.

The final concert of Bob Marley’s career, this oft-bootlegged show has never sounded better than on this official 2011 release from the Marley estate. With plenty of hiss and maxed levels, Live Forever is hardly perfect when it comes to sound quality, and the laid-back show doesn’t stand up against Marley’s live masterpiece Babylon by Bus, but fans who want their reggae party a little less “punky” will find this a great, chilled alternative. Seeing as they were on tour in support of the album, plenty of material from Uprising appears, including lesser-known numbers such as “Zion Train” and “Work.”

Two CD set. Four essential classic DJ albums - 2 new to CD. By the close of the 1970s, the DJ style had been long established as one of reggae music's most popular subgenres - and few producers embraced the style more enthusiastically than Kingston-based hitmaker Joe Gibbs. Throughout decade and into the next, Gibbs released a wealth of material by almost every talk-over artist on the island, from veteran pioneers such as U Roy and Count Matchuki to the cream of the second generation of toasters, notably the quartet of DJ superstars whose music fills this 2CD set. The first disc of the collection features a pair of classic 1977 long-players from two giants of the genre, namely Wade Brammer AKA Trinity - best-known for the hugely popular 'Three Piece Suit', the inspiration for Althea & Donna's UK chart-topper, 'Uptown Top Ranking' - and Michael Williams, who, as Prince Far I, first achieved international recognition with his hugely popular 1976 hit, 'Heavy Manners'. Disc 2 presents a further two albums from 1980 that respectively showcase the talents of the immensely popular Ranking Joe (Jackson) - who throughout the late 70s and early 80s cut a series of major Jamaican hits - and the talented Prince Mohammed, who also enjoyed significant success as a vocalist under his real name of George Nooks. Now, at long last, these four essential Joe Gibbs-produced LPs from the heyday of the original DJ era are brought together on this double disc set, with the Trinity and Prince Far I albums unavailable on CD for two decades, and both long-players on disc 2 making their long overdue digital debut.
