Utilizing old roots rhythms revitalized by the Roots Radics Band, and giving the songs a hard, but danceable edge, producer Henry ‘Juno’ Lawes and Barrington Levy together helped establish a whole new dancehall sound. 1980's Robin Hood, mixed at King Tubby’s by Scientist, merely affirmed what everyone in Jamaica already knew: That Levy was now the biggest star on the island, with a talent that was unbeatable.

Heartattack and Vine, Tom Waits' first album in two years and his last of seven for Asylum Records, is a transitional album, with tracks like the rhythm-heavy title song and "'Til the Money Runs Out" foreshadowing the sonic experiments of the Island albums, while piano-with-orchestra tracks like "Saving All My Love for You" and "On the Nickel" (written as a motion-picture title tune) hark back to Waits' Randy Newman-influenced early days…

While they never achieved the commercial success or cultural impact of the Wailers, Toots & the Maytals were nearly as important in the history of Jamaican music; like the Wailers, the Maytals thrived as ska gave way to rocksteady and then evolved into reggae, they boasted one of the island's finest singers and most charismatic frontmen in the great Toots Hibbert, and they worked with many of the most important producers and sidemen on the island. the Maytals were also the band that most clearly demonstrated the links between Jamaican sounds and American R&B (Hibbert's rich, emotive vocal style was informed by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and other soul icons), and the group's catalog contains a number of crucial, frequently covered tracks, most notably the classic "Pressure Drop."

This collection of soundtrack music by the German-born film composer Hans Zimmer includes his first film score, A World Apart, as well as his co-written, club-influenced soundtrack for the award-winning My Beautiful Laundrette. A subtle, expressive composer, Zimmer makes good use of brooding, layered themes in pieces like "The Fruit Machine," while his music for The Island combines folk-themed segments with dramatic orchestral flourishes.

If Closing Time, Tom Waits' debut album, consisted of love songs set in a late-night world of bars and neon signs, its follow-up, The Heart of Saturday Night, largely dispenses with the romance in favor of poetic depictions of the same setting. On "Diamonds on My Windshield" and "The Ghosts of Saturday Night," Waits doesn't even sing, instead reciting his verse rhythmically against bass and drums like a Beat hipster. Musically, the album contains the same mixture of folk, blues, and jazz as its predecessor, with producer Bones Howe occasionally bringing in an orchestra to underscore the loping melodies…

The final Asylum album from 1980 couldn't be more different than Waits' '73 debut - his voice sounds like the marvellous ruin that we know and love today, the ballads remain (On the Nickel is beautiful and even Springsteen took a crack at Jersey Girl) but it's the twisted warped blues of the title track that points the way to the extraordinary world of Swordfishtrombones.

Two CD set. Four essential classic DJ albums - 2 new to CD. By the close of the 1970s, the DJ style had been long established as one of reggae music's most popular subgenres - and few producers embraced the style more enthusiastically than Kingston-based hitmaker Joe Gibbs. Throughout decade and into the next, Gibbs released a wealth of material by almost every talk-over artist on the island, from veteran pioneers such as U Roy and Count Matchuki to the cream of the second generation of toasters, notably the quartet of DJ superstars whose music fills this 2CD set. The first disc of the collection features a pair of classic 1977 long-players from two giants of the genre, namely Wade Brammer AKA Trinity - best-known for the hugely popular 'Three Piece Suit', the inspiration for Althea & Donna's UK chart-topper, 'Uptown Top Ranking' - and Michael Williams, who, as Prince Far I, first achieved international recognition with his hugely popular 1976 hit, 'Heavy Manners'. Disc 2 presents a further two albums from 1980 that respectively showcase the talents of the immensely popular Ranking Joe (Jackson) - who throughout the late 70s and early 80s cut a series of major Jamaican hits - and the talented Prince Mohammed, who also enjoyed significant success as a vocalist under his real name of George Nooks. Now, at long last, these four essential Joe Gibbs-produced LPs from the heyday of the original DJ era are brought together on this double disc set, with the Trinity and Prince Far I albums unavailable on CD for two decades, and both long-players on disc 2 making their long overdue digital debut.

Uprising would be the final studio album featuring Bob Marley & the Wailers to be released during Marley's lifetime. Prophetically, it also contains some of the band's finest crafted material, as if they were cognizant that this would be their final outing. The album's blend of religious and secular themes likewise creates a very powerful and singular quest for spirituality in a material world. Although it is argued that an album's graphic design rarely captures the essence of the work inside, the powerful rebirthing image of a rock solid Marley emerging with his arms raised in triumph could not be a more accurate visual description of the musical jubilation within. Musically, the somewhat staid rhythms often synonymous with reggae have been completely turned around to include slinky and liquid syncopation. "Work," "Pimper's Paradise," and the lead-off track "Coming in From the Cold" are all significant variations on the lolloping Rasta beat.
