This reissue of a 1993 live album was never intended to memorialize Townes Van Zandt (in the saddest of posthumous ironies, its Sugar Hill sleeve includes a phone number to call for bookings), but it'll do for now. Originally released by Sundown, a tiny Austin indie with limited distribution, the 17-song set finds Van Zandt in fine form – upbeat, gracious, apparently sober – and in good company, with fiddler Owen Cody and guitarist Danny Rowland adding a dimension of musical enhancement that never overwhelms the nuances of the material. As anyone who ever saw Van Zandt fall off a stool recognizes, there was no such thing as a typical Townes performance, but when he was good, no one working in the Texas troubadour tradition has ever been better.

Masculinities in Literature of the American West

Masculinities in Literature of the American West by Lydia R. Cooper
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1137568992 | 197 Pages | PDF | 3.5 MB

The Western genre provides the most widely recognized, iconic images of masculinity in the United States - gun-slinging, laconic white male heroes who emphasize individualism, violence, and an idiosyncratic form of justice.

There’s always been a wonderful, symphonic bombast that’s gone with the heroes of space operas, probably no more notably then when John Williams re-launched the old-school sound of the Big Hollywood Orchestra with 1977’s STAR WARS. Yet as he made a new generation of sci-fi fans imagine they were Luke Skywalker, Han Solo or Princess Leia Organa, there was a group of earthbound heroes with names like Alan Shepard, John Glenn and Gus Grissom who needed to get their Hollywood due, not to mention the swirling strings and brass that would come with it. The composer who would help elevate them to icon status would be Bill Conti, whose main theme for 1983’s THE RIGHT STUFF became the soundtrack equivalent of “Entrance of the Gladiators” – music that defined pride, bravery and duty with no small measure of rousing excitement. Here that patriotic vibe is played under a slow-motion shot of astronauts marching towards the fearsome wonder of space itself, a classic cinema image that would be riffed on in every film from RESERVOIR DOGS to ARMAGEDDON.

Over the past decade, The Velvet Underground’s live archive has been raided with increasing frequency. First we got the official release of a long-bootlegged 1966 Columbus, Ohio gig as a part of the “super-deluxe” edition of The Velvet Underground & Nico. And in 2013, the 1967 Gymnasium gig (which had only circulated amongst collectors for a few years), showed up on the similarly super deluxe White Light/White Heat box set. At this point, there’s very little live material left from the John Cale-era of the group, at least that anyone knows about. But one of the strangest, most fascinating treasures of Cale’s time with the Velvets still remains in the hands of bootleggers: “Sweet Sister Ray.”

Jarrod Quarrell's journey through the Melbourne underground, from the scuzz rock of New Season and the no-wave languor of St Helens through to Lost Animal's dub-inflected street hassles, appeared to be about the laconic singer-songwriter satisfying his solo vision. But on Lost Animal's follow-up to 2011's Ex-Tropical, Quarrell has found valued collaborators such as in-demand multi-instrumentalist Shags Chamberlain, and the result is an expansive recasting of the frontman's aesthetic. Message for the Future blares with maximal regret and there's a sci-fi elegance to Leave It on the Streets, and while Lost Animal has retained Quarrell's uneasy topography, the project now sounds like a dark reflection of pop's ambitious outsiders.

Malakoff Kowalski was born to Persian parents in Boston, grew up in Hamburg, and lives in Berlin today. Of the many instruments that can be heard in Kowalskis recordings, the piano has always played a significant role. And so it is on this album, My First Piano. These ten piano pieces are described by the critic Max Dax as little hybrids of finger exercises, doodling, aphorisms and the laconic. A bold, well-tempered piano player blurring the lines between classical and jazz.
