In his lifetime Pietro Antonio Locatelli was held in great esteem throughout Europe, both as a composer and as a virtuoso on flute and violin. Born in 1695 in Bergamo, he studied in Rome with Corelli and was for a time in the service of Prince Philip of Hesse-Darmstadt and of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, whom he accompanied on a number ofjourneys. By 1729 at the latest he had settled in Amsterdam, where he stayed, except for occasional concert tours, until his death in 1764. Here he founded a Collegium musicum, worked as a versatile teacher, and seems also to have advised the local music publishers, taking editorial charge of numerous works by foreign composers. His own compositions, mainly concertos and sonatas in various instrumentations, were all published between 1721 and 1762, either by Amsterdam houses or by himself.
