George Frideric Handel made a name for himself as a brilliant organist and harpsichordist early on in his career. As a young man, he travelled from Germany to Italy in 1707. We do not know exactly how much or what Handel composed for harpsichord while in Italy, but we know more starting from the time he settled in England. Handel composed all sorts of works for harpsichord in England. In November 1720, he published the Suites de Pièces pour le Clavecin, now known as the "Eight Great Suites", his most important work for harpsichord.

Dieterich Buxtehude’s chamber works today counts among the least known of his compositions. They were already forgotten soon after 1700, and this despite the fact that two third of Buxtehude’s chamber sonatas, unlike any other category in the composers creative output, were published during his lifetime. The publication of sonatas indicates that there was a market for this repertoire in the later 17th century. Moreover, the publication of two sets of such works suggests that the fame of the Lübeck master and the success of the first set must have created the demand for a second. However, the primary reason for these works getting out of fashion by the time of Buxtehude’s death was their unconventional instrumental scoring and, more importantly, the triumphant rise of the modern Italian trio sonata by Corelli, Albinoni, and others in the early 18th century.

Count Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer (1692-1766), the composer of the beautiful music on this recording was unknown for over two centuries. This was not through bad fortune, but rather because the author took active steps to remain anonymous. Before it was established that the Dutch nobleman Count Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer was the creator of these works, they were attributed to the Italian Carlo Ricciotti, before being included and renamed Concertini in the Collected Edition of Pergolesi. For over a hundred years these Pergolesi Concertini have been enjoyed and performed, bringing great credit to that composer. Indeed, when Igor Stravinsky wrote his Pulcinella suite and made use of the music of Pergolesi he included a Tarantella based on the last movement of Concerto No.2.

…This set is highly recommended. The high quality sound is cool, vivid and well balanced. I just love the consistent purity and nobility of the playing which is marvellously assured and refined. There is never any Romantic wallowing and the performances are characterful but never overacted.

"…Koopman opts for solo strings in this, which is generally a good idea, and allows the two horns and oboe to sing out easily. Some listeners, however, may find the solo double-bass just a little too prominent – it has a quite percussive edge sometimes, which is not at all unpleasant, but a touch surprising nonetheless. (No slur on the excellent bass playing, more likely a problem for the recording team). This is an ideal issue for these hot summer nights; Eine Kleine Mozart to keep you cool with highly efficient musical air-conditioning." ~MusicwebInternational

This interpretation is very emotional and introspective, in turn conveying the intense hurt, the angst, the blind fury, the awe, and the final exaltation that one feels with when one is trying to come to terms with the decisions of the higher power. It felt like Ton Koopman had deliberately steered away from the grand orchestra mode and went with the more individualistic perspective, which was probably the unique twist that made me go back to it again and again.
