THE COOKERS, the veteran jazz supergroup that The New York Times calls 'a dream team of forward-leaning hard-bop,' returns with its fifth and most exhilarating album to date, The Call of the Wild and Peaceful Heart. After nine years together, The Cookers have evolved from a summit of swinging road warriors to become simply one of the most burning and hardest-hitting bands on the scene.

In 1987, Duke Robillard released the album Swing (Rounder), a successful combination of jazz and jump blues. He got his old friend, tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton to help him out with the recording. Although Robillard is primarily known as a blues guitarist, the record made it obvious that jazz is also deeply rooted in his musical DNA. With Swingin' Again, he revisits the jazz world, and he once again teams up with Hamilton to help him out.

As a composer and bandleader, trumpeter David Weiss is dedicated to the proposition that there are still new stories to be told from within the bebop tradition. The several collaborative bands he's spearheaded over the last three decades—including the superband, The Cookers—are towering examples, but none more personal to his voice than this ongoing Sextet. With longtime collaborators saxophonist Myron Walden and drummer EJ Strickland, and newer musical partners such as tenor saxophonist Nicole Glover and pianist David Bryant, Weiss creates expansive harmonic and rhythmic frameworks for the group to explore and summit. Intriguing melodies and virtuosic solos highlight this set of five originals, along with compositions from Freddie Hubbard and Slide Hampton.

Recorded at the same show that produced his Jazz Organ Summit live album with Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Jimmy McGriff, this is the full set, recorded live in Chicago on his birthday. Backed by a hard swinging quintet including Bob Devos on guitar, Greg Rockingham on drums, Eric Anderson on tenor sax and Jim Rotundi on trumpet, Earland swings through a set that includes great renditions of his "Black Talk," "The Burner's Magic" and closes with a swinging version of Pat Upton's "More Today than Yesterday." One burning set by a true master of the B-3. Highly recommended.
