Here we have a summit meeting late in the careers of the pioneering titans of Afro-Cuban jazz: Dizzy Gillespie fronting the Machito orchestra on trumpet, with Mario Bauza as music director, alto saxophonist/clarinetist, and organizing force, and Chico O'Farrill contributing the compositions and arrangements. This could have been just a nostalgic retro gathering 25 years after the fact, but instead, these guys put forth an ambitious effort to push the boundaries of the idiom. The centerpiece is a 15-minute trumpet concerto for Gillespie called "Oro, Incienso y Mirra," where O'Farrill melts dissonant clusters, electric piano comping, and synthesizer decorations together with hot Afro-Cuban rhythms into a coherent, multi-sectioned tour de force…

The debut album Siren, from Portland, Oregon based trio Five Letter Word, takes its title from audiences’ oft-guessed origin of their band name. Such speculation is not that far afield, as these three powerful women, with their harmony-driven ‘siren song’ folk/Americana, are vocally alluring, achingly sweet, and known to provide some unexpected dramatic songwriting twists and turns. Taking inspiration from the harmonic tradition of groups like The Wailin’ Jennys, Dixie Chicks, and The Wood Brothers, Five Letter Word add their own special flair, as Vortex Magazine remarks: “the fiery, sweet sounds the three create when they come together is uniquely infectious.”

Sharp Nine Records is pleased to present the debut recording of a hot new organ quartet, The Loop, led by hard bop trumpet master Jim Rotondi and assisted on the front line by his longtime partner in jazz pyrotechnics, Eric Alexander. This live date was recorded at the Bird's Eye Jazz Club in Basel, Switzerland during the band's initial European tour in early 2012 and features the same hard-hitting, hard-swinging vibe jazz fans have come to expect from these two horn masters' domestic exploits. Ably assisted by Renato Chicco on organ and up-and-coming drummer Bernd Reiter, this CD is a 50/50 mix of great standards and originals. The tracks are long and the blowing is intense, so sit back and enjoy some heavy hittin' from across the pond.

The musical traditions of the Arabic world are fused with jazz improvisation and European classical techniques by Lebanese-born oud player and composer Rabih Abou-Khalil. The CMJ New Music Report noted that Abou-Khalil has "consistently sought to create common ground between the Arab music mileau of his roots and the more global musical world of today." Down Beat praised Abou-Khalil's music as "a unique hybrid that successfully spans the world of traditional Arabic music and jazz." Although he learned to play the oud, a fretless, Lebanese lute, as a youngster, Abou-Khalil temporarily switched to the classical flute, which he studied at the Academy of Music after moving to Munich, Germany, during the Lebanese Civil War in 1978.
