Helen Merrill (born Jelena Ana Milcetic) is an American jazz vocalist. Her first album, the eponymous 1955 release "Helen Merrill", was an immediate success and associated her with the first generation of bebop jazz musicians. After a prolific 1950s and '60s when she recorded with Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown, Merrill spent time recording and touring in Europe and Japan, falling into obscurity in the United States. In the 1980s and '90s, a contract with Verve Records and high-profile performances in America returned her to prominence. Noted for her emotional, sensual vocal performances, her career continues in its sixth decade with concerts and recordings.

Of the five compositions that were recorded for this album, three were specifically commissioned by Mr. Norman Granz for this date. The remaining two, "Django" and "The Queens Fancy", were older compositions of John Lewis that were specially orchestrated by Mr. Gunther Schuller for this session. The Modern Jazz Society Presents a Concert of Contemporary Music is an album of music composed by John Lewis and arranged and condducted by Gunther Schuller which was originally released on the Norgran label. Allmusic awarded the album 3 stars. The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded the album a "Crown" of recommended jazz recordings.

Smokin' at the Half Note is essential listening for anyone who wants to hear why Montgomery's dynamic live shows were considered the pinnacle of his brilliant and incredibly influential guitar playing. Pat Metheny calls this "the absolute greatest jazz guitar album ever made," and with performances of this caliber ("Unit 7" boasts one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded) his statement is easily validated. Montgomery never played with more drive and confidence, and he's supported every step of the way by a genuinely smokin' Wynton Kelly Trio. In 1998, Verve reissued the complete show on disc two of Impressions: The Verve Jazz Sides, although the scrambled track order and some non-essential cuts don't diminish the appeal of the original album.

The by turns grizzled and vaporous-toned Webster really hit his stride on the Verve label. During a stretch from roughly 1953-1959, the Ellington alumnus showcased his supreme playing with both combos and string sections, swingers and ballads and lurking beneath his blustery and hulking sound were solo lines brimming with sophistication and wit. This 1957 date with the Oscar Peterson Trio is one of the highlights of that golden '50s run. After starting off with two bluesy originals the slow burning title track and gutsy "Late Date" Webster gets to the heart of things on five wistful ballads: Here, his exquisitely sly "Makin' Whoopee" is only outdone by an incredibly nuanced "Where Are You."

Csaba Palotai's guitar has a wild DIY feel of people who prefer setting out to arriving, who can breathe more easily in a messy cellar than in a renovated chateau. A guy whose sound has some personality, some verve, who isn't neat and tidy, waxed smooth or with a short-back-and-sides. No, Csaba Palotai's sound scratches, rubs, and grates. It's a sound that can't be domesticated: you let it kindle itself like a wood fire. Guitarists (jazz ones particularly, but not just them) often like to show that they are guitarists. Csaba Palotai tries rather to make us forget that. Plurality of sound, elegance, and modesty, this is the trinity that could define this Hungarian, now based in France for more than twenty years.

While on the surface it may seem like a quixotic task to choose a single disc as a sampler for something like Verve's elephantine 18-disc The Complete Bill Evans On Verve box, in this specialized case, the concept does work. Evans' primary live vehicle was the piano trio, with the post-bop approach and format rarely varied, and this collection of mid-'60s tracks drawn from four live albums catches an intelligent cross-section of his usual palette of standards with a handful of originals thrown in. Among the best choices are a particularly well-structured "Turn Out the Stars" from the Village Vanguard from 1967 (drummer Philly Joe Jones could light an especially hot fire underneath Evans) and a lovely solo "I Loves You Porgy" from Montreux.
