Even in her native Brazil, Astrud Gilberto was a virtual unknown before she interpreted the bossa nova "The Girl From Ipanema" in 1964 with her cool, breathy voice and made it a world hit. Her unobtrusive, but at the same time magically attractive performance style is the focus of this new compilation. In her own unmistakable style, she interprets not only bossa novas, but also pop hits of the 1960s and 70s as well as jazz standards.

Verve Records releases the latest editions in its breakout Great Women of Song series, which pays homage to the ground-breaking work and lasting impact of some of the greatest female vocalists of all time. Like her idol Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae could own a ballad and make it all her own. She could also swing every bit as hard as her other main influence, Ella Fitzgerald. Coming up during the bebop era and under the musical sway of Thelonious Monk, Carmen made a series of recordings for the Decca label that would cement her reputation and launch a career that close to 50 years. Whether in small groups or backed by a studio orchestra, Carmen McRae recorded definitive versions of songs that make up the backbones of jazz and the Great American Songbook.

United by their love of rip-roaring artfully delivered klezmer, She'Koyokh spin tales of wild goats, unmarried women and broken hearts drawn from the rich folk traditions of Eastern Europe, Turkey and the Balkans. Inspired by wandering nineteenth century klezmorim, She’Koyokh have spent the last decade sponging up the rich folk musics of Eastern Europe, Turkey and the Balkans. The first incarnation of the band cut its teeth busking at Columbia Flower Market in the heart of London’s East End. Nowadays they are more likely to be found stomping the stage floors of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls with Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and London’s Southbank Centre already ticked off the list…

Spectrum is Billy Cobham's solo debut as composer and he takes us through familiar musical realms, reminiscent of both his past work with Miles Davis as well as the aggressive depiction of Jazz Fusion composed by The Mahavishnu Orchestra. 'Quadrant 4' starts off the album on a high note. Immediately, without hesitation or restrain, the music erupts with the passionate dexterity of it's musicians. Tommy Bolin and Billy Cobham have developed quite the synergy during the recording sessions, and it can be easily perceived by this performance alone.

This set of 4 CD's contains all the recordings Nina Simone made for the Philips label from 1964 to 1966. There has never been a singer quite like this wonderful lady. There seems to have been no type of song she couldn't sing from "I Loves You, Porgy" to "Mississippi Goddam" to "Nearer Blessed Lord" to "The Last Rose of Summer." When Ms. Simone sang them, she put her own DNA on them and they became her own. Born in North Carolina, Ms. Simone was raised singing in the church and was trained at Julliard as a classical pianist. These CD's illustrate her background and training background so well. Sometimes the piano becomes another voice in a dialogue with the singer rather than a mere accompaniment. She is impossible to categorize, jazz, gospel, blues, folk, classical, all of the above and then some. So many emotions here: joy, sadness, anger, love.

A quotation of Richard Pryor says: "White people had Judy Garland, we had Nina." I'm sure this was a true statement at the time. Nina Simone, thank godness, is loved and revered all over the world by people of all races who love good music, and believe in freedom.

As Duke Ellington would have said, Dinah Washington was “beyond category”. Subtle and inventive enough to hold an honored place in the jazz pantheon yet tough and forceful enough to command the attention of blues, R&B and rock & roll audiences. Equally at ease performing Broadway songs, pop tunes or jazz material, Washington combined urbane finesse with down-home grit to make music that reflected her strong-willed, larger-than-life personality.
