British writer Guy Ritchie made his feature directorial debut with this crime-caper comedy-drama set in London's East End and heavy on the Cockney dialogue (with one scene in subtitled Cockney rhyming slang). A big-bucks scheme goes awry: Cardsharp Eddy (Nick Moran) and pals Bacon (Jason Statham), Tom (Jason Flemyng), and Soap (Dexter Fletcher) scuffle to pile up enough money to put Eddy at the card table opposite gangland porn lord Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty). Unfortunately, the whole plan backfires, leaving Eddy owing Harry a huge sum, payable within the week. In truth, Harry hopes to acquire the bar run by his rival, J.D. (Sting), who is Eddy's father. To raise the cash, Eddy sets out to steal from a marijuana business run by Winston (Steven Mackintosh), but the inevitable gunplay doesn't make for an easy heist. World premiere at the 1998 Edinburgh Film Festival (Focus on British Cinema).

Crest of Betrayal is an awesome mixture of Japan's two greatest stories, the loyal 47 Ronin and the Ghost of Yotsuya. By combining the two stories into one, director Fukasaku has created a masterpiece. When former ronin Tamiya Iyemon joins the Asano Clan, he brings with him a legacy of death and destruction. Aside from Horibe Yasubei, he is the only one with fighting experience and his past exploits with the sword should help in the group carrying out their long-awaited vendetta against Lord Kira. Meanwhile, his personal life takes a twist when the granddaughter of a wealthy clan official falls in love with him and tempts him to leave his wife Oiwa and marry her. Powerful and haunting, this combination of love and action will have you on the edge of your seat as the tension mounts before the great attack on the vile Lord Kira.

This project had its genesis back in 1983 with a Benson promise to Count Basie that he would record an album in his style, a promise partially fulfilled the following year with 20/20's "Beyond the Sea." Focusing on standards that steer commendably clear from tunes normally associated with Basie, Benson takes on the dual challenge of big-band singer and lead guitarist and succeeds with authority in both roles. The robust playing of the Basie band under Frank Foster poses absolutely no problems for Benson's muscular guitar, for he punches out the notes and octaves in irresistibly swinging fashion (for prime mature Benson, check out "Basie's Bag"). As a vocalist, he sounds solid and debonair, blending well with Basie vocalist Carmen Bradford on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" There are two deviations from the format, though.
