In the latest release in Willowhayne Records' acclaimed Experience series, organist John Hosking is joined by soprano Olivia Hunt, violinist Xander Croft and harpist Bethan Griffiths in a varied programme from St Asaph Cathedral. With two world premiere recordings of the music of John Hosking, the recording also includes music by J. S. Bach, Léon Boellmann, Lili Boulanger (her beautiful Pie Jesu) and Sigfrid Karg-Elert's Symphonic Chorale 'Nun ruhen alle Wälder.' John Hosking is Director of Music at Holy Trinity, Southport, following fourteen years as Assistant Director of music at St. Asaph Cathedral. He is also one of the organists for the BBC’s Daily Service. A student at the Royal College of Music, John became Organ Scholar of Westminster Abbey in 1996 and is the only person to ever hold this post for a period of three years. During this time, John played the organ for many Royal and State occasions, broadcast for the BBC and played twenty solo recitals in the Abbey.

The notion of Chrissie Hynde recording a jazz album initially seems odd, even incongruous. Hynde admitted as much in the promotional cycle for the release of Valve Bone Woe in 2019, calling herself a "devout rock singer," but revealing that the idea of a jazz album appealed to her because she has a "penchant for cover songs." That much is true. Ever since the first Pretenders album, she's managed to sneak other people's songs into LPs and set lists, but Valve Bone Woe is her first collection primarily devoted to covers. If its existence is a bit of a surprise, it is, perhaps, less of a shock that Valve Bone Woe isn't strictly jazz. Hynde weaves covers of the Beach Boys ("Caroline, No"), Nick Drake ("River Man"), and the Kinks ("No Return") among versions of songs by Frank Sinatra ("Hello, Young Lovers"), John Coltrane ("Naima"), and Charles Mingus ("Meditation on a Pair of Wire Cutters").

Nous sommes au milieu du salon. Le public est au même niveau que le groupe. Certaines personnes se sont assis sur un coussin. La scène est délimitée par un tapis et Eloïse Decazes se tient sur le bout de ses pieds. Ses yeux se perdent dans l’air, elle a un sourire de fou et ses mains effectuent un mouvement gracieux. Sing Sing nous donne l’impression d’être monté sur un ressort. Ses mains viennent heurter sa guitare avec véhémence, elles tiennent ce rythme syncopé, tendu et incendiaire. Mocke est assis sur le côté de la salle de concert improvisée. Il tient un bottleneck. Il le fait glisser sur le manche de sa Fender Jazzmaster, tissant ainsi un ensemble de lignes mélodiques qui se perdent avec le temps dans les derniers rhizomes de nos cerveaux. Arlt arrête sa musique comme ça et nous ne pouvions qu’être là.

This is a beautiful album of French impressionistic works for cello and piano. Along with some standards are some wonderful, less often played works by Lili Boulanger. American cellist Natasha Farny has performed with the Boston Symphony, the Buffalo Philharmonic, and several orchestras throughout New York. Solo and chamber music tours include appearances in Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Brazil, and nationally at Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts, Brooklyn’s Bargemusic “Here and Now” Series, and Florida’s BIG ARTS Sanibel series. Nationally, Ms. Farny has performed live on radio programs including Chicago’s “Live from WFMT” and is a regular guest at WXXI’s “Live from Hochstein” series in Rochester, New York. This season, her duo Ekstasis will perform at Merkin Hall, Bard College, and Saugerties Pro Musica. She has been appointed to numerous summer festivals including the Sewanee Music Festival, the National Music Festival (MD), and the Colorado Music Festival and during the year, teaches at the School of Music at SUNY Fredonia.
