Stonefield have been rendering their powerful mosaic of proto-psych since they were only as tall as the smallest of the strange stone formations that surround their hometown in Australia’s rural South-East. For over a decade, the four Findlay sisters have seemingly existed within their own stellar nebula; unaffected by fleeting modern musical trends, their sound is a homage to the prog, metal and psych powerhouses of the 70s whilst remaining completely their own.

Ask anyone around the Austin-San Marcos-San Antonio area who’s in the know in their scene, and whether they like it or not, they’ll probably tell you psychedelic rock. In the last few years, bands like The Halfways and the Roaring Sun have cropped up with a new brand of Texas neo-psychedelia. This movement, as far as this reviewer can tell, seems to be due to the pervasiveness at the moment of neo-psych music in indie-rock in general. With Australian bands like Tame Impala, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Pond, as well as American bands like Thee Oh Sees and The Black Angels all coming into prominence in the last ten years, we should have seen this coming.

An exciting development from under strange Australian lab-lights: O.R.B. have respawned from last year’s BIRTH with a further mutated slab of paranoid heavy shred, Naturality.

Art As Catharsis is proud to release the debut self-titled record from Turtle Skull – a warm, full toned psychedelic record with a range of influences equally as colourful as their music. Taking inspiration from Black Mountain, Sleep, King Gizzard and more, Turtle Skull’s finished product gives fresh direction to the Australian psych scene. Rolling low riffs, patterned bass lines, groaning guitar and counter-cultural lyrics merge over an exchange of dirty and smooth tracks – the final product satiating those hungry for both heavy grooves and thoughtful song writing.
