Lost

In 1971 Ian Waterman was a butcher on Jersey. He was nineteen, newly qualified and working flat out to make a go of the business. Then suddenly he went down with what seemed to be gastric flu. But it wasn’t. He became wobbly and weak. Within days he had collapsed and was in hospital, unable to move or feel his body.

An acoustic trio, the Lost Fingers were based in Quebec City, Canada, and were known for their love of classic gypsy jazz and '80s pop hits. Their shows were a blending of both – seemingly disparate – styles, seeing the band cover hit '80s tunes as well as playing homage to such jazz legends as Django Reinhardt. Their reputation and skill won them a great many fans very quickly, and the group was to be found not too long after forming, playing some of the world's best-known festivals, including a ten-night stand at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

The ‘Lost In Stars’ album features the man himself on synths and drums, Darren Burgos in charge of vocals, backing vocals, drums and synths, TEC favourite KID MOXIE also on vocals and bass guitar, Alysa Lobo on vocals and Gaku Murata with his guitars.

There is something special about two musicians in unison. Solo artists bear the brunt of pretty much everything – be it success or failure, joy or misery, it is all on their shoulders. Groups, meanwhile, are mostly perceived as ideal examples of democracy, when the reality is that they are governed by a benign dictator (if lucky) or a cruel despot (if not). Duos, on the other hand, are clearly in tune (and harmony) with themselves and each other.
