Lost, Lost, Lost - by Jonas Mekas (1976)

Jonas Mekas had been a New York film critic and friend of many independent filmmakers when he decided to try his own hand at making films. Lost, Lost, Lost is one of his most well-known films, and is an interesting montage-esque autobiography. The footage was shot over several decades, and many shots have a very home-movie feel to them. Some shots are quite beautiful and thought provoking.

The Moody Blues‘ third album, In Search of the Lost Chord will be reissued as a five-disc, 50th anniversary box set in November. This set features three CDs and two DVDs. The CDs include both the original stereo mix and a new stereo mix, along with mono ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides of the original Deram-era singles, BBC radio sessions, alternate mixes and other bonus tracks (including a never-before-heard mono version of ‘Legend Of A Mind’).

Filmed between 1949 and 1963, Lost, Lost, Lost looks back at Mekas’ earliest years in New York. As Mekas adjusts to a life in exile, he searches for a sense of community among Lithuanian émigrés in Brooklyn before finding kinship in the burgeoning arts scene. A sense of melancholy permeates the film but by the end, Mekas finds ecstasy: paradise regained through cinema. Mekas connects with Lower Manhattan’s poets and filmmakers, and the 60s adventure begins.
