A 60 minutes documentary film Shakti Timeless, which tells the story of the indo-western music group Shakti. Formed in 1975, the group pioneered a groundbreaking and highly influential musical East-meets-West approach. In the 70s, the group, whose name means creative intelligence, beauty and power, consisted of legendary British jazz guitarist John Mclaughlin, North Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and violinist L. Shankar and ghatam (percussion) player T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram, both of whom hail from South India. Together, they created a fluid and organic sound that managed to successfully combine seemingly incompatible traditions.

Trumpeter David Weiss incorporates a heavy-duty guitar assault into this exhilarating program designed with a diverse track-list, comprised of originals by jazz luminaries Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, John McLaughlin and Tony Williams among others. The trumpeter's Point of Departure ensemble generates a neo-jazz fusion panorama, coupled with an emphatic integration of progressive jazz amid references to bop and a few excursions into the outside realm. Besides the triad of outstanding guitarists, Weiss yields a big payout from all-star saxophonists Myron Walden and J.D. Allen also appearing on select tracks.

When you start proclaiming that your music is ready made for those who "appreciate the music in the tradition of Weather Report, Return to Forever, The Dixie Dregs, Mahavishnu Orchestra, or Medeski, Martin, and Wood", well, you'd sure as hell better deliver the goods. The new release from instrumental fusion outfit Zed is called You Are Here, and contains nine tracks filled with plenty of groove, solo spots, and progressive arrangements. Problem is, I think by even mentioning some of those classic bands, the bar was perhaps set a little too high. Rarely does any of the interplay here come close to what we would expect from RTF, the Dregs, or Mahavishnu.

As of 1976, Jean-Luc Ponty's variations on the Mahavishnu Orchestra theme were still fresh and imaginative, cast in a distinctively different, more lyrical, more controlled framework. For Imaginary Voyage, Ponty's instrumental lineup is identical to that of Mahavishnu – electric violin, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums – but he turns the emphasis on its head, with all commands coming directly from the violin (his) and less competitive crossplay emanating from his colleagues…

Since John McLaughlin's first two post-Shakti albums – Electric Guitarist and Electric Dreams – featured the word "electric" in their titles, it seems that the guitarist wanted to emphasize his more plugged-in side to those who might not have followed along on three previous releases featuring his acoustic world music band. He also thumbed through his impressive phone book to call in some of the cream of the 1977 crop of jazz fusionists to help him out on Electric Guitarist, a true return to form. Ex-Mahavishnu members Jerry Goodman and Billy Cobham assist in kicking things off just like in the old days with "New York on My Mind," a tune that could have been an outtake from his earlier Mahavishnu Orchestra work.

As of mid-2018, the Ozrics are on hiatus, and the fate of the band is uncertain. Bandleader and chief composer Ed Wynne returned to England to record a studio album, and Ozric tour dates have ceased. Beyond that, not much else is known. Outside of a core group of listeners, usually decades-long fans, the comings and goings of this instrumental group have never been much of a buzz generator - even at the band's inception 35 years ago, Ozric Tentacles were something of an anachronism. Unwaveringly championing elements of Gong, Hawkwind, Mahavishnu Orchestra, mixed in with splashes and textures of reggae, electronica, and psytrance, it is no surprise that many of the group's fans are older than the band members themselves…

Five Times Surprise brings together a volatile mix of longtime compatriots and newly forged relationships. The distinguished improvisers all boast exceptionally diverse resumes. More than finding common ground, they reveal a vast universe of possibilities fueled by creative conflagration and genre blurring. “We’re improvisers who can walk into a room and create something together,” says the project's original instigator Henry Kaiser, who then listed the salient qualities of his fellow players here: the ability to listen, kindness, generosity, and—rare in this electric realm—a sense of humor. All those factors were at work on this new recording.

On the Future of Aviation, Jerry Goodman's first album after a ten-year hiatus, didn't sound much like the jazz-rock fusion he had played in the Flock and the Mahavishnu Orchestra earlier in his career. Instead, it was an album of new age electrified instrumental music that did not emphasize his violin playing particularly. For his second album of the 1980s, Goodman may have been prevailed upon or may have decided himself to give his fans something more familiar. Ariel leaves little doubt that its primary performer is a violinist.

A rarely seen filmed performance by the splendid Miles Davis septet, recorded live in Warsaw in 1983 - with saxophonist Bill Evans and guitarist John Scofield. This fabulous, complete concert was filmed shortly after Miles Davis recorded his celebrated album 'Star People' - and features many of the compositions from the album, although it hadn`t actually yet been released when they performed in Poland. Bill Evans (the sax player) had been replaced by Branford Marsalis on the original studio versions of 'That`s Right' and 'Code M.D.'
