Sam Fuller's last film as a director, made during his self-imposed European exile, stars Keith Carradine as once glamorous pop singer Michael, who has been reduced to a grizzled street bum scavenging for booze and food. The cause of his downfall was his affair with the beautiful Celia (Valentina Vargas), a mistress of ruthless crime boss Eddie (Marc de Jonge). The mobster punished the singer "where it hurts most" – by slitting his throat and thus ruining his career. Years later, Michael crosses paths with Eddie and his thugs again and gets a chance for revenge.

When Napoleon invades the Russian Empire during the Napoleonic wars, Boris Grushenko (Allen), a coward and pacifist scholar, is forced to enlist in the Russian Army, desperate and disappointed hearing the news that his cousin Sonja (Keaton) is to wed a herring merchant. He inadvertently captures a group of enemy soldiers, but to no avail, as the French army reaches Moscow immediately afterward. He returns and marries the recently-widowed Sonja (who really does not want to marry Boris, but promises him she will when she thinks he is about to be killed in a duel), a marriage filled with philosophical debates, and no money. Boris thinks that the French invasion of Moscow should put an end to the war. His narcissistic wife, angered that the invasion will interfere with their plans to start a family that year, conceives a plot to assassinate Napoleon at his quarters. Boris and Sonja debate the matter with some degree of philosophical double-talk, and Boris reluctantly goes along with it. Sonja escapes arrest while Boris is executed despite being told by a vision that he will manage to escape.

"Guerre et Amour" (French Title). Russie, 1812. Boris épouse sa cousine Sonia. Tous deux projetent d'assassiner l'Empereur et parviennent à l'approcher en se faisant passer pour des frères et soeurs bourgeois. Private detective Lew Harper (Paul Newman) investigates a blackmail plot in Louisiana bayou country involving the nymphomaniac daughter (Melanie Griffith) of an old flame of his, Iris Devereaux (Joanne Woodward). He is caught up in a power struggle between Iris and oil tycoon Kilbourne (Murray Hamilton). At one point, the complicated plot has Harper and Kilbourne's wife Mavis (Gail Strickland) locked in a hydrotherapy room, with the water rising to the ceiling, hence the film's title.

Lew Harper, un détective privé, est contacté par Iris Devereaux, une ancienne maîtresse, devenue entre-temps l'épouse d'un riche industriel. Celle-ci a récemment reçu une lettre anonyme la menaçant de faire éclater au grand jour ses nombreuses infidélités conjugales. Iris soupçonne fortemment Pat Reavis, son ancien chauffeur, qu'elle a récemment congédié, d'être à l'origine de ce courrier. Harper accepte d'enquêter et se rend en Louisiane, où il s'aperçoit que la famille Devereaux est bien inquiétante. L'affaire se complique rapidement lorsqu'Olivia, l'intrépide aïeule du clan, est assassinée. Cette fois encore, Reavis semble être un coupable tout désigné…

A young man, Brendan (Sean Bean), seeks work in a jazz club owned by Finney (Sting). There is some suggestion that Finney has past connections with organized crime but is attempting to leave these behind. Two gangsters arrive to make Finney an offer he cannot refuse for his Club but Brendan overhears them and warns Finney who then turns the tables on them. At the same time Newcastle is preparing to host a visit from a group of American investors that it hopes to engage in a grandiose regeneration project. Kate (Melanie Griffith) a waitress has been recruited to service the delegation. Kate and Brendan meet and fall in love. Amongst the visiting group is Cosmo (Tommy Lee Jones) a corrupt business man who we learn uses Kate as a prostitute to secure business deals. It is Cosmo who has been putting the pressure on Finney as the Club stands in the way of his plans for the city leading to an eventual conflict.
