After recording Level Headed, an album that mostly forsaked their hard rock leanings for pure pop, longtime lead vocalist Brian Connolly left Sweet for good. The rest of the group decided to press on as a trio, combining their pop/rock sound with a variety of other musical styles in a bid to gain a more progressive image. The result was Cut Above the Rest, a bizarre combination of the hard-rocking pop that dominated classic Sweet singles with progressive flights of fancy in a 10cc/Electric Light Orchestra vein, plus a dash of lounge lizard-ish soft rock balladry thrown in to cover all the pop/rock bases…

Soulful, folk-pop | Label: Sweet Alibi / Independant

Sweet Alibi could've gotten away with another soulful, folk-pop blended self-titled album like their first which earned the talented trio a nomination for best vocalist at the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Awards, plus seemingly endless accolades from fans and talent buyers across the country. Instead, despite a tumultuous past few years for Jess Rae Ayre, Michelle Anderson and Amber Quesnel, they created a more introspective and inspirational sophomore album by answering their own nagging question about whether there would be a follow up album at all.

We have received many requests to add Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham to our songwriter series. It’s never really been about if we would, so much as when. With 2011 being something of a “Year Of Southern Soul” for Ace and Kent, what better way to kick it off than with a genius gathering of 24 of the best songs ever to bear their names below the title. “Sweet Inspiration” does a bang-up job of assembling the key songs Dan and Spooner wrote together during the 1960s and early 1970s. A quick look at the track listing will show prospective buyers that my co-compiler Bob Dunham and I have tried hard to make sure that there’s a version of every major Penn and Oldham composition included. We haven’t always chosen the obvious versions, so there will be some nice surprises here for even the most avid collectors. It was difficult to bring what started out as a massive wish list down to just 24 selections, but we think our choices do justice to the performers of the songs and, most importantly, the writers.

This single-disc volume brings together the first two chapters in saxophonist and composer Marion Brown's stellar Impulse! trilogy. Geechee Recollections (1973) and Sweet Earth Flying (1974) are, along with their final chapter, Vista (1975), arguably the finest moments in his catalog. Thematically, these two titles and Vista examine and celebrate the legacy of poet Jean Toomer and also revisit Brown's childhood in Atlanta and around the Georgia countryside. They are grounded in Southern folk themes and blues with just a kiss of funk. The musicians on Geechee Recollections are vocalist Bill Hasson (who actually does a long-form accompanied sung/spoken recitation of Toomer's poem "Karintha"), percussionist Jumma Santos, trumpeter (pre-Wadada) Leo Smith, drummer Steve McCall, and bassist James Jefferson as well as others on percussion.

UK collection of tracks from this '60s French chanteuse. From French parentage and good Royal stock (Prince Philip was her godfather), she quickly rose to 1962/1963's Pop royalty with former Shadow Tony Meehan as her recording manager producing her one and only hit, Jerry Lordan's cute as they come 'I'm Just a Baby'. She further boasted an address book that contained Paul McCartney, who she regularly hully gullied with, and Gerry Marsden, who wrote the Pacemakers' subsequent hit, 'Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying', especially for her. A bit of a Mersey beat pin up, Louise would tour with both the Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers later that year. The Sweet Beat of Louise Cordet collects together all of Louise's recordings for the UK Decca label including her last single featuring two very different sides to Louise - Dionne Warwick's dramatic 'Don't Make Me Over' paired with possibly her best recording, a beat style workout of Mary Wells' lyrically adventurous Motown track 'Two Lovers' featuring Jimmy Page on guitar.
