After recording Level Headed, an album that mostly forsaked their hard rock leanings for pure pop, longtime lead vocalist Brian Connolly left Sweet for good. The rest of the group decided to press on as a trio, combining their pop/rock sound with a variety of other musical styles in a bid to gain a more progressive image. The result was Cut Above the Rest, a bizarre combination of the hard-rocking pop that dominated classic Sweet singles with progressive flights of fancy in a 10cc/Electric Light Orchestra vein, plus a dash of lounge lizard-ish soft rock balladry thrown in to cover all the pop/rock bases. There's no way an album that tries do so many things at once could succeed at all of them, but Cut Above the Rest is a surprisingly listenable affair…
Sweet's earliest recordings - the clutch of 45s issued in the U.K. and Europe between 1968 and 1971 - made it out in a variety of forms in the years following the band's initial breakthrough. Strangely, however, it was not until 1991 - a full 20 years after "Funny Funny" gave them their long-awaited first hit - that the entire canon was pulled together, as Repertoire raided the vaults not only of Fontana and Parlophone, the band's first two labels, but also visited some less-familiar directions as well. The bulk of First Recordings 1968-1971 - tracks one through eight - comprises all four original singles, a mixed bag that ran from the unadulterated pop of "Lollipop Man" and "Slow Motion" to the convincing harder rock of "The Juicer"…

A modern adult contemporary singer, Kelly Sweet's debut album, We Are One, made moves on various AC radio charts after its release, based on the power of a few important singles. "Raincoat" and "We Are One" show a soft-voiced approach to ballads that's just a bit upbeat. This is normally the territory of singers like Dido and Norah Jones, but Sweet adds a deeper touch of production to the mix, making a slightly more man-made sound and using it for dramatic effect.

The Sweet is a British glam rock band that rose to worldwide fame in the 1970s. Their best known line-up consisted of lead vocalist Brian Connolly, bass player Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott, and drummer Mick Tucker. The group was originally called Sweetshop. The band was formed in London in 1968 and achieved their first hit, "Funny Funny", in 1971 after teaming up with songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and record producer Phil Wainman. During 1971 and 1972, their musical style followed a marked progression from the Archies-like bubblegum style of "Funny Funny" to a Who-influenced hard rock style supplemented by a striking use of high-pitched backing vocals.
