What sets the Dave Matthews Band apart from other jam-inclined festival veterans is the solid foundation of catchy songs upon which all their instrumental explorations lie. Matthews also subtly incorporates some Latin rhythms and World Fusion into his bouncy Jam Rock/Pop, which gives his songs more sonic texture and extra dimension.

Dave Matthews has masterminded his way to the top of the jam band mountain. With his meandering compositions and happy-go-lucky lyrics, Matthews and his back-up band have kids dancing in the aisles of his sold-out performances. Much like his predecessor Jerry Garcia, Matthews stirs awe in his followers. It may be his dimples more than his guitar playing that captivates audiences, or possibly his quirky dancing and jigging that hypnotize; whatever it is, he takes the crowd for a ride.

Formed in the early '90s by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians – bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and short-lived keyboardist Peter Griesar – and the band built up a strong word-of-mouth buzz by touring the country constantly, with special attention paid to college campuses. Griesar left the lineup in March 1993, but the Dave Matthews Band moved ahead in his absence, releasing the independent album Remember Two Things later that year and issuing a live EP, Recently, in 1994. After fielding offers from major labels, the band signed with RCA and released the debut effort Under the Table and Dreaming in September 1994.

Dave Matthews Band performed at historic Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL on September 18, 2010 to more than 40,000 fans. With this performance, the band joined a short list of elite musical acts that have performed at the historic ballpark, including Jimmy Buffett, The Police, Billy Joel & Elton John and Rascal Flatts. Recorded shortly before the band embarked on a planned year hiatus from touring in 2011, the Chicago show was a definite crowd-pleaser with a mix of new surprises and older fan favorites. The album was recorded on the second night of a two night stint at the venue. Most notably, this performance was the last on the band's 2010 Summer tour, and 2011 touring hiatus.

Dave Matthews Band wrapped up touring in the Fall of 2000 with a run that took them through Gund Arena in December. At this point in time songs like JTR and Bartender were still new to fans but developing into fast favorites. Those songs coupled with proven crowd pleasers from the band’s catalogue make for a very strong setlist that plays out beautifully onstage.

In 2002 DMB embarked on a lengthy tour (with guest Butch Taylor on keys) that lasted all the way into December. In May, they arrived at Shoreline Amphitheatre to play a solid set of tunes from their most recent release, Everyday, and their upcoming release, Busted Stuff, with some old favorites sprinkled in. LeRoi’s inspired playing is present the whole set, most notably on So Right and Raven. A classic sounding Lover Lay Down fades into The Stone, which features some incendiary drumming from Carter. This recording highlights a unique vibe the band finds at this beloved venue and is a truly enjoyable listen.
