Homosexuality has been a part of post-war popular music since its very inception. Until the early 70s, however, it wasn’t talked about openly in that world: it was coded, hidden, secret. This of course mirrored society - during the 50s and 60s, the gay community felt like outcasts: harassed by the police, demonised by the media and politicians, imprisoned simply for being who they were. This compilation spans the time before and after Bowie, reflecting both the coded nature about the topic in the 50s and 60s and the greater openness that occurred in the early 70s. It begins in late 1955, with the extraordinary success of Little Richard; continues through early-60s pop and pop art; Tamla and Soul, Glam Rock, the early 70’s funk and disco that was played in the underground New York clubs, and then moves on to the omnipresence of Disco, in the late seventies.

Mr. Bungle was an American experimental rock band from Eureka, California. The band was formed in 1985 while the members were still in high school, and was named after a 1950s children's educational film regarding bad habits which was later featured in a 1981 Pee-wee Herman HBO special. Mr. Bungle was known for its highly eclectic style, often cycling through several musical genres within the course of a single song. Many of its songs had an unconventional structure and utilized a wide array of instruments and samples. Live shows often featured members dressing up (usually in masks earlier in the band's career) and an array of cover songs. Collection includes: 'Mr. Bungle' (1991); 'Disco Volante' (1995); 'California' (1999).

Besides Giorgio Moroder, he is frequently credited with pioneering electronic dance music. Cowley's own hits included "Menergy" in 1981, and "Megatron Man", which hit #1 and #2 respectively on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1981. That same year, Patrick Cowley became the DJ at the "Menergy" parties at The EndUp in San Francisco. He also wrote and produced the dance single "Right on Target" for San Francisco artist Paul Parker, which also reached #1 on the Billboard dance chart in 1982. A collaboration with Sylvester, "Do Ya Wanna Funk", made #4 on the Billboard dance chart that same year. Cowley also did a 15'45" long remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love", which is now a collector's item…

Ladonna Gaines moved from her hometown of Boston to live and work in Munich in 1968, appearing in the musicals Hair and Porgy and Bess. It was during her time here that she met her husband Helmut Summer, their marriage giving her the opportunity to change her name to Donna Summer. Her first big hit was Love to Love You Baby which became an international smash and featured her sighing vocal over a disco beat. I Feel Love was her next major success and along with her screen debut in the awful disco film Thank God it’s Friday, which gained her an Oscar for the song Last Dance, she was now recognised as the true diva of disco. The ‘70s also saw her release the hits MacArthur Park, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls and No More Tears (Enough is Enough) with Barbra Streisand.
