Although not as satisfying in terms of overall content as the individual soundtracks, this concert recording of Ennio Morricone film music with the composer leading the Orchestra and Chorus of the Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia has its virtues. Among the latter are the superb musicianship of a full-blown classical orchestra and chorus and the exceptionally clean sound, although this also has its flaws – the quality of the recording is impeccable, although there is a certain lack of presence; producer David Mottley and recording engineer Mike Sheady could have tried for a closer, more intimate sound, although the performance's wit and charm come through along with the virtuosity of the players.

This release from Urania Records features one of the last concerts of Luis Bacalov, wherein the great artist recalls his homeland and some of his own works alongside works of great composers like Astor Piazzolla and Isaac Albeniz in a personal journey which is moving and evocative. Argentine-born Italian composer and pianist Luis Bacalov first became famous for the film scores that he composed for Spaghetti Western films. He was nominated twice for the Academy Award for Original Score, winning it in 1996 for Il Postino. He also composed widely for chorus and orchestra, and served as artistic director of the Orchestra della Magna Grecia in Taranto, Italy. He was also considered a brilliant pianist, widely regarded among his peers for his virtuosic technique.

The Compost crew gets their hands on Ennio Morricone for some major remix efforts. On Remixes Vol. 1, International Pony kicks things off with a silly homage ditty, but Alex Attias and Swell Session quickly get things into house territory with their mixes. If you've ever wanted to dance to the harmonica of "Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo," now's your chance! And, as expected, Hakan Lidbo goes tech-house blippy on "Alla Serenita." Leroy Hanghofer brings some bright, ringing tones to "Beat N. 3," while Needs offers "Amore Come Dolore" some mellow jazz. Kabuki puts some speedy breaks to "Dal Mare," and the Butti 49 give "Rivoluzione" an Afro-jazz vibe…
