Talvin Singh - Ok (1998)

OK is one phrase that's universally known and understood, and on OK Talvin Singh tries for a similar global connection. A classically trained tabla player, he's performed with Björk and Massive Attack, holds his own club nights in London, and is the leading light of the burgeoning Asian Underground movement--in other words, a man of many parts. He brings them all together here--the Bollywood strings, the kannakol patterns of Indian music, and the skittering rhythms of drum & bass and jungle--to create something that is new and thoroughly vibrant. This is Britain at the millennium...

It is the meeting of three musicians of the Armorican tip sharing their compositions and their ways of apprehending the sound, with those of three musicians coming from the classical Indian tradition. The ties naturally weave between our modal musics, and thus springs a common language, which mocks well the clichés and slogans of the time, whether they are identity or universalist. Initiated by Ronan Pellen, this encounter reflects his trajectory as a traveling musician, from the Celtic Procession of Jacques Pellen to the Indian Raga tradition transmitted by his sarangi master Pandit Santosh Mishra. The pieces gathered here are mainly from the repertoire of Sukhdev, Jacques and Ronan, with a loan from Joni Mitchell. Ganga is the Ganges which borders the city of Varanasi, the sacred Indian city from which this music is inspired, the city where Sukhdev Mishra lives and to which he dedicates the title Homage to Kashi.

In 1967, when teenaged prodigy Steve Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group (for whom he'd sung lead on hits like "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man") to start a new band with guitarist Dave Mason, few observers thought their idea of blending pop, rock, and jazz would work. Immediately, though, Traffic scored giant UK hits with Winwood's east-meets-west "Paper Sun" and Mason's acid-jazzy "Hole in My Shoe." Between those songs, the smoking-guitar driven title track, the swinging instrumental "Giving to You" and the haunting ballad, "No Face, No Name, No Number," Traffic's debut established both players as elite members of the new guard of late 60s British rock.
