When Michael Sanderling took up the post of principal conductor with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in 2021, it marked the beginning of a collaboration that has attracted worldwide attention.

Although by no means Brahms’s very first composition, the Sonata in C major bears the number ‘Op.1’ and is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant débuts in musical history. No wonder no less than Robert Schumann saw Brahms as the saviour of German music.

Johannes Brahms’ Liebeslieder–Walzer (1869 & 1875), Op. 52 and Op. 65, are a cheerful, short, witty set of songs full of anger, joy and rejection. These part-songs are accompanied by one piano, with four hands and any number of voices can perform any selection.

The art of the Swiss pianist of Hungarian origin Géza Anda, which is as unmistakable as it is elusive, is revealed even more impressively in the concert recordings of his career spanning almost 35 years than in the studio recordings, many of which have remained a reference. The numerous surviving concert recordings show the image of an artist who is committed to unconditional dedication and great expressivity. This is impressively demonstrated by the live recordings of Mozart's B flat major Concerto K. 456 and Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1, published here for the first time, which occupy a special place and rank in Anda's oeuvre.

This year, GENUIN and the German Music Council, together with Deutschlandfunk Kultur, are once again presenting a prizewinner of the German Music Competition: clarinetist Lyuta Kobayashi. Not only has he been successful in this competition, he has already won several prizes despite his young age. In his program of works by Johannes Brahms, Jörg Widmann, Robert Schumann, and the klezmer clarinetist Helmut Eisel, he will be accompanied by the no less talented pianist Julian Emanuel Becker, who this year was the youngest participant to win a prize at the 32nd St Albans International Organ Competition (UK).

The Z.E.N. Trio – pianist Zhang Zuo, violinist Esther Yoo and cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan – met on the BBC New Generation Artists’ scheme in 2015 and have since performed concerts together for BBC radio as well as across the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

For their first recording, Bruno Philippe and Tanguy de Williencourt have chosen three masterpieces of Romantic chamber music. Throughout this programme, the piano carries on a dialogue with the full, warm sound of the cello in a fascinating polyphony.
