Ministry of Sound might have settled with Spotify, but they aren’t settling with their compilations. They released Tommy Trash‘s INSPIRED last month, and now we’re previewing their next compilation: Addicted To Bass 2014. Now, after seeing that title, I thought we’d be getting a fresh compilation of some of the finest UK bass, dubstep, and upfront selections. Nope, we got a lot of Beatport chart toppers and only a sprinkle of taste. That’s not to say any of this negatively, as we do like a number of the tracks including Oliver Helden’s “Animals” remix, Rockwell‘s London Grammar remix, and even Andy C‘s remix of Chase & Status‘ “Count On Me.” Addicted To Bass 2014 is out on April 7.

Judging by Toolroom's latest mammoth collection, the sound of the White Island in 2014 will be uplifting house music. Granted, there are some diversions on this compilation thanks to Eric Sneo's rattling minimalism and Doorly's jacking "Thunder Clap", but these are few and far between. Even Kelis gets in on the vocal house sound, with Breach chopping up the singer's vocals on his tracky version of "Rumble". Breach faces stiff competition from his peers though, with Tensnake turning London Grammar's "Hey Now" into an epic vocal anthem. However, the stand out contribution comes from a real veteran and MK's piano-led take on Lancelot's "Givin' It Up (feat Antony & Cleopatra)" recalling classic KMS. Enjoy!

André Previn's 1975 EMI recording of Carmina Burana sounds better than ever in this new transfer. The analog tape hiss has been tamed, yet there's more "air" between the notes and a greater sense of dynamic and timbral definition. Engineering-wise, the mid-70s were golden years for EMI, and the rhythmic verve, dramatic momentum, and unbuttoned joy that Previn and his brilliant forces project still pack a sonic wallop. The soloists especially are outstanding. Thomas Allen navigates Orff's cruelly high tessitura with no effort, and Sheila Armstrong wraps her warm, flexible pipes around "In trutina mentis dubia" to moving effect.
