This CD is aimed at rediscovering Gaetano Amadeo, original organist and composer from Porto Maurizio (today's city of Imperia). Born in the early nineteenth century, he was immediately noted for his great predisposition to music, so much that he was sent to the famous opera composer Giovanni Pacini, who, recognizing the value of the boy, sent him to the Bologna Philharmonic Lyceum; soon afterwards Gioachino Rossini himself will introduce him to the prestigious Philharmonic Academy of the same city.

Many North German composers brought the great richness of this instrument to its highest splendor: besides Michael, his namesake Hieronymus Praetorius, Buxtehude, Tunder, Weckmann, Leyding, Druckenmüller, Hanff and Bruhns founded the North German Organ School between the 16th and 18th centuries. Dirk Trüten plays the organ of the Catholic Church in Dübendorf, Switzerland, built by Bernhardt Edskes in 2014.

Dietrich Buxtehude's organ works are today in the standard repertoire for organists all over the world, but this is the first time an organist has engaged so intimately with Buxtehude by using the very instrument on which the works were composed. Dacapo Records' new Buxtehude series will consist of a total of six CDs, and besides the St. Mary's Church in Elsinore they will be recorded in the other two churches where the composer was employed, the S:ta Maria Church in Helsingborg and the Marienkirche in Lübeck.

The organ sonatas of Josef Rheinberger still feature large in the repertoire of church organists everywhere, thanks to their attractive melodies and fluent writing for the instrument. Rheinberger’s industry and his skill as a teacher have overshadowed his gifts as a composer in other genres, which this new release helps to redress with suites and tone-pictures for the combination of strings and organ. Oboist Cristina Monticoli also joins her Italian colleagues for two arrangements which sympathetically transfer the main melodies of movements from the organ sonatas to the oboe.

Brilliant Classics has already published all 88 of Domenico Cimarosa’s keyboard sonatas in their commonly encountered appearance as harpsichord pieces (BC95027), as well as an album of 30 sonatas in arrangements for guitar (BC94172). He may still be better known as a composer of comic opera, for masterpiece such as Il matrimonio segreto, but this new album of the sonatas in versions for organ celebrates the variety and adaptability of Cimarosa’s idiom and demonstrates why he was so lionized in his own time.
