Leni Stern is an electric guitarist, singer, and ngoni player. She was interested in music from an early age, beginning piano studies at the age of six and taking on the guitar age of eleven. Forming her own acting company at the age of seventeen, Stern attracted media attention and performed her radical productions in front of sold-out European crowds. In 1977, Stern chose music over acting, and left Germany for the United States to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying film scoring. She gave up film scoring in favor of the guitar and moved to New York City in 1981, playing in various rock and jazz bands. In 1983, she formed a band of her own with Paul Motian on drums and Bill Frisell on guitar. She has been awarded the Gibson Guitar Female Jazz Guitarist of the Year five consecutive times.

In between projects and musical collaborations in Europe and Africa, Brussels saxophonist Toine Thys recorded his third album as a trio, ‘The Optimist’, in New York with some major names from Jazz and African music. Desertions, snowstorms, cancelled flights, fires and calendar issues; everything seemed to go against the creation of this new album. With unbeatable energy and optimism in the face of all the trials, Toine Thys finally managed to bring these magnificent musicians together in a New York studio to record this album.

Canadian guitarist Michael Brook worked with Nusrat to create the 1990 crossover hit Mustt Mustt, and the release was hailed internationally and credited with leading Pakistani youth to discover Sufi religious music, qawwali. This follow-up project helped establish something of a tradition for Real World crossover projects.

As a child of Cenon, the drummer Roger Biwandu has forged an international itinerary at the age of 16 by embarking with Bireli Lagrène. From tours to recordings, he will have accompanied the greatest ones (Salif Keita, Joe Zawinul, Jeff Beck …) before embarking on the composition. With his 3rd album, he pursues his quest for a jazz hard bop of black American influence, notably that of the masters Jeff "Tain" Watts, Branford and Wynton Marsalis. Without forgetting to slip on the side of the pop and the clear melodies that make his claw, offering trio a modern jazz, bold and open, rhythmic still energetic.

Un simple duo balafon-piano sans électricité ?
Le piano est chromatique (octave divisé en 12 demi-tons) et le balafon diatonique (octave divisé en 7 notes).
Le piano est une percussion à cordes et le balafon une percussion à lames de bois, doté de résonateurs sous chaque lame, sous forme de petites calebasses recouvertes d’une toile d’araignée avant, et de papier à cigarette maintenant, qui font office de vibrateurs. Si une bonne partie de leur tessiture est commune, leur timbre est suffisamment différent pour ne pas se confondre, mais pour parfois se mélanger et donner l’impression d’un même instrument.
