The Who‘s 1967 album The Who Sell Out will be reissued as a seven-disc super deluxe edition box set in April. The album was originally planned by Pete Townshend and the band’s managers (Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp) as a loose concept album with jingles and commercials linking the songs. This approach was partly because the record label were demanding a new record and Townshend felt as if he didn’t have enough songs!

On the Who's final album with Keith Moon, their trademark honest power started to get diluted by fatigue and a sense that the group's collective vision was beginning to fade. As instrumentalists, their skills were intact. More problematic was the erratic quality of the material, which seemed torn between blustery attempts at contemporary relevance ("Sister Disco," "New Song," "Music Must Change") and bittersweet insecurity ("Love Is Coming Down"). Most problematic of all were the arrangements, heavy on the symphonic synthesizers and strings, which make the record sound cluttered and overanxious. Roger Daltrey's operatic tough-guy braggadocio in particular was beginning to sound annoying on several cuts. Yet Pete Townshend's better tunes - "Music Must Change," "Love Is Coming Down," and the anthemic title track - continued to explore the contradictions of aging rockers in interesting, effective ways…

For many The Who is the best British rock band that emerge in the 60s. In its original formation (Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Keith Moon and John Entwistle) the group had four unique and charismatic personalities. Townshend was always the ideologue and visionary of the band, someone that from a cultural point of view, always rose above the average rock musician. Also, although being a limited –technically speaking- musician, he was highly original, both for the sophisticated chords he played and for his particular ideas when he was approaching his guitar solos, not to mention his devastating stage presence that made him one of the rock's biggest guitar icons.

My remix of what for many is the greatest rock album ever made (and who am I to disagree?), Who’s Next by The Who is released as part of a lavish box set by Universal on 15th September. The set is really a beautiful thing to behold, although I appreciate that some many have preferred a cheaper option in order to hear the remix (the Atmos mix will however also be available on streaming services). I made new stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mixes of 8 of the original 9 album tracks (the multitrack for Bargain was not available so appears as a Penteo upmix), as well as new stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mixes of 14 bonus tracks from the 1970-72 era, meaning there are a total of 22 tracks newly mixed from the multitracks. The stereo and 5.1 mixes are in 96/24, the Atmos mixes are at 48/24.
