Barsegh Kanachian (1885-1967) is one of the outstanding representatives of musical culture of Armenian diaspora. While living in Turkey, Cyprus and Lebanon Kanachian was very prolific as a composer, choirmaster, pedagogue, musical public figure. Decisive role in B.Kanachian's musical destiny had his meeting in Istanbul in 1910 with the classicist of Armenian music Komitas. He sang in Komitas' «GUSAN» choir, took choirmaster lessons from him and became one of his «five students». Many years later, in 1936 he founded permanently functioning choir in Beirut, naming it in name of Komitas' choir- «GUSAN». Jazz-iz Christ is Serj's brainchild, but truly is a collaborative effort between many musicians that Tankian curated to be part of the group and self-titled album. Among others, there are considerable contributions from renowned pianist Tigran Hamasyan, flautist Valeri Tolstov, and trumpet player Tom Duprey. Additional performances from Stewart Copeland and actor/musician David Alpay and Vincent Pedulla make for a very unique collaboration. The 15 tracks that comprise Jazz-iz Christ, a mostly instrumental effort except for 4 tracks, are an amalgam of progressive jazz, electronic, ethnic and even rock elements, displaying a unique presentation of the genre itself.
There was a review series I began back in Bird is the Worm‘s infancy stage titled Know Your Sideman. It was to highlight artists who have participated on a series of solid recordings without ever really putting one out with their own name in large print as session leader. It was a nice idea, but for a variety of reasons, that review series never quite took off. That said, there’s no doubt that bassist Nicolas Moreaux would have merited a column for his work. His 2013 release Fall Somewhere is just outstanding. It’s not his first album.
Bijan Chemirani is interested in mythical musical spaces. On Gulistan, Chemirani explores a place where Greek, Persian and Azerbaijani music meet. A gulistan is a rose garden, the classic metaphor for the source of inspiration for poets and musicians. The album is full of spirited tempo and fiery instrumental conversations between fiddles and percussion. These are Middle Eastern fiddles, kamanchehs, kemences and rebecs. In the Persian musical tradition, the kamancheh is thought to be the world's original fiddle.
