Among other things, recordings are frames of reference, an aural blueprint of a performer. The incredibly eclectic saxophonist/composer Ben Wendel's 2012 CD Frame will give a glimpse of his musical foundation composed of equal parts jazz, rock and ambient music. His unique combination of sounds and influences create compositions that are wholly unique listening experiences. The CD's program features eight new compositions and a duo arrangement of Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma" featuring piano wunderkind Gerald Clayton. One of the last great representatives of romanticism in Russian classical music, Rachmaninoff was also one of the leading pianists and conductors of his day; few composers have come close to his striking gift for melody and for exploring the expressive possibilities of the piano.
This box contains all the published works written by Rachmaninov, plus some bonus cd's with historical performances by artists like Horowitz and Rachmaninov himself.
The bonus CD-ROM that accompanies this great big box contains an essay by Julian Haylock entitled "The Lonely Romantic," which puts all this rapturously beautiful music into context.

Rock/Jazz

Jazz-iz Christ is Serj's brainchild, but truly is a collaborative effort between many musicians that Tankian curated to be part of the group and self-titled album. Among others, there are considerable contributions from renowned pianist Tigran Hamasyan, flautist Valeri Tolstov, and trumpet player Tom Duprey. Additional performances from Stewart Copeland and actor/musician David Alpay and Vincent Pedulla make for a very unique collaboration. The 15 tracks that comprise Jazz-iz Christ, a mostly instrumental effort except for 4 tracks, are an amalgam of progressive jazz, electronic, ethnic and even rock elements, displaying a unique presentation of the genre itself.

There was a review series I began back in Bird is the Worm‘s infancy stage titled Know Your Sideman. It was to highlight artists who have participated on a series of solid recordings without ever really putting one out with their own name in large print as session leader. It was a nice idea, but for a variety of reasons, that review series never quite took off. That said, there’s no doubt that bassist Nicolas Moreaux would have merited a column for his work. His 2013 release Fall Somewhere is just outstanding. It’s not his first album.

Bijan Chemirani is interested in mythical musical spaces. On Gulistan, Chemirani explores a place where Greek, Persian and Azerbaijani music meet. A gulistan is a rose garden, the classic metaphor for the source of inspiration for poets and musicians. The album is full of spirited tempo and fiery instrumental conversations between fiddles and percussion. These are Middle Eastern fiddles, kamanchehs, kemences and rebecs. In the Persian musical tradition, the kamancheh is thought to be the world's original fiddle.

No need to introduce Erik Truffaz and the characteristic sound of his trumpet, unmistakable yet unpredictable. Crowned with glowing (and fully deserved) praises, the Franco-Swiss jazz-man takes his melodies on a journey through audacious and surreal musical lands, following and exalting the mutations, hybridisations and contradictions of Jazz. Fusion, rock, hip hop, EDM,… Erik Truffaz has tried them all, always staying true to his mischievous and dreamy spirit.
