For his first album with Warner Classics, Lahav Shani conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in Symphony No. 7 and plays Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4: two pieces which come from Beethoven’s so-called “middle period”. The classical harmonic tension contributes to the drive of the music as much as the rhythmic propulsion. This music features a clarity of texture and, above all, a unity between the melodic motive and the accompaniment. Acclaimed for his “instant chemistry” with the orchestra, Lahav Shani is considered the shooting star amongst conductors – as Der Tagesspiegel puts it: “The young maestro is simply sensational”.

Arnold Schoenberg’s second string quartet – included on a previous release by the Gringolts Quartet – is often used as a reference point when the emergence of atonality is discussed. That work, where Schoenberg in the fourth movement suddenly does away with a time signature, was composed in 1907, three years after his first work in the genre: the String Quartet in D minor, Op. 7, a work which still has much in common with the Late Romantic idiom of Richard Strauss.

Tatjana Ruhland has been described as "the Paganini of the flute", and in December 2018 the Tagesspiegel, commenting on her interpretation of Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune with the Berliner Philharmoniker, termed her "a fabulous faun" and declared: "Already the first measures justify the jubilation at the end". Now she once again is heard as an interpreter on CPO, this time with more flute concertos by August Eberhard Müller. The critics showered her with praise for Vol. 1, for her rendering of the concertos with "inexhaustible musicality"

In many ways Mahler’s Seventh and Eighth Symphonies are the most unusual works that the late Romantic composer ever wrote. The Seventh was the last in a series of middle-period pieces that were purely instrumental in character. Two movements headed “Nachtmusik“ (night music) and the remarkable writing for a guitar and a mandolin help to create a sequence of darkly Romantic visions. And even within Mahler’s markedly eclectic output, the Eighth Symphony enjoys the status of an exotic outsider thanks not only to its two-movement form combining an early medieval hymn and the final scene from Goethe’s Faust but also to the vast forces for which it is scored, earning it the title of “Symphony of a Thousand”.

In the words of Richard Wagner, Beethoven's Seventh is a true "apotheosis of the dance". It has enjoyed perennial popularity ever since it's premiere, unlike his sole ballet, The Creatures of Prometheus, of which only the overture has remained (more or less) familiar to us. The musicians of the Freiburger Barockorchester, under the direction of their Konzertmeister Gottfried von der Goltz, offer a brillant new version of this key work in Beethoven's corpus while reviving the complete version of one of his most unjustly forgotten masterpieces.

Thomas Søndergård conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in the world premiere recording of Klaus Simon’s arrangement of Mahler's Seventh Symphony for chamber orchestra. From the solemnity of its opening, to the atmospheric Night Music movements and its joyous conclusion, Mahler’s Seventh Symphony takes us on a journey from fading dusk to a bright new day. This performance was recorded as part of the 2020 Edinburgh International Festival and marked Music Director Thomas Søndergård's International Festival debut.Klaus Simon has created arrangements of six Mahler Symphonies as well as works by Schoenberg, Berg and Ravel. His arrangement of the Seventh Symphony was premiered in July 2019 by the Alma Mahler Kammerorchester at the Vendsyssel Festival in Denmark. Simon hopes that his arrangements will ‘enable a new and slimmer, even clearer, listening experience.’ The critics certainly agreed, describing it as ‘revelatory and ‘engrossing’..This arrangement is published by Universal Edition E.G. Wien. The two other albums in this series are Edinburgh International Festival: Chamber Music Highlights 2020 and Menotti: The Telephone.
