Nils Frahm

Nils Frahm and Gmeiner attended the same school in Hamburg. A mutual interest in sound recording brought them together and they began producing their own radio show which featured sounds from school, the voices of their teachers and recordings of their own instruments, all recorded on tape machines for kids. In 1989, East German schoolboy Sebastian Singwald spent 2 weeks at their school. Frahm and Gmeiner bonded with him instantly. Their friendship grew from there. After the Berlin Wall came down, Gmeiner and Frahm were eager to visit Singwald to play as a band.

The debut album by Nonkeen sports an extensive back story, dating back to the trio's first musical experiments growing up in Germany in the late '80s. Nils Frahm, Frederic Gmeiner, and Sebastian Singwald would trade tapes back and forth between Hamburg and Berlin, creating music with whatever instruments they had on hand, making up skits and stories, and updating each other about their lives.

Dmitry Evgrafov returns with his fourth career album and third for FatCat’s 130701 imprint (Max Richter, Johann Johannsson, Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka). His most accomplished work to date, ‘Surrender’ is a broad and dramatic record that expands the Moscow-based artist’s palette and reaches beyond the usual post-classical range. Revealing an ambitious scope across the twelve-track span, it is bold in conception and beautifully recorded.

Erased Tapes are set to release 'Spells', the new album by their latest signing: Berlin-based composer, producer and sound designer Ben Lukas Boysen, on 10th June 2016. 'Spells' merges programmed piano pieces with live instruments, combining the controllable technical world and the often unpredictable aspects of live improvisation. In some ways it continues where his underground debut 'Gravity' left off, though a lot of weight is lifted, making room for a lighter and more energetic listen. Friend and fellow Erased Tapes artist Nils Frahm mixed and mastered both albums.

This year, we celebrate a very special milestone: 10 years of Piano Day! What began in 2015 as an idea by Nils Frahm has grown into a worldwide tribute to one of the most beautiful instruments. Every year on the 88th day – a nod to the piano's 88 keys, artists, music lovers, and pianists unite to honor the boundless power and beauty of piano music.
