This double cd pack is more than a simple anthology. It starts with a complete John Cale-overseen remaster of the long out-of-print 1982 album "Music for a new society", along with 3 exclusive new tracks. But the real meat of the work is M:Fans, a complete reworking of the entire original 1982 album, to which the remastered "Music for a new society" serves merely as preface. "John Cale re-contextualises the original songs into radical new forms to resonate with the digital age. Includes a new recording of 'Back To The End' - a previously lost track from the original session."

The Chinese lute, Pipa, is said to have already existed in the year 221 BC, in the Qin Dynasty, the time when Emperor Shih Huang Ti brought the provinces to gether under one rule. It means the instrument has a history of over two thousand years. In this album, the beautiful Chinese lute music is played by the female lute player Shao Rong from Shanghai.

The Heartbreakers' L.A.M.F. is hailed as one of the classic punk albums. Formed by New York Dolls Thunders and Jerry Nolan in 1975 they influenced the UK punk scene, joining the Sex Pistols, Damned & Clash on the infamous "Anarchy" tour. L.A.M.F. was released on Track Records in 1977 to much acclaim, but was marred by a muddy sound. In 1994 Jungle found long-lost original mud-free sessions and re-compiled the album. This edition of L.A.M.F. was amended with a bonus disc featuring studio outtakes, rehearsals and early demos. The studio rehearsals include the original instrumental backing tracks with studio chat, plus alternative 1977 mixes from different studios, and two demo sessions from early and late 1977.

One of the most popular idioms to emerge in 20th century Chinese music is the concertante work for traditional instruments and western symphony orchestra. This vast literature has existed with very few examples ever making it outside of China. Gao's "Images of Baima" is a miniature concerto for erhu and zhonghu (the violin and viola of the Chinese two-string fiddle family). While a stylistic throw-back (it sounds like Rimsky-Korsakov or Borodin in an orientalist mode), it is dazzlingly orchestrated and a terrific vehicle for the soloists.

Do not let the prosaic album title fool you; contained within is 50 minutes of truly lovely Chinese orchestral music, designed to harmonize the body, emotions and mind. For millennia the Chinese have been aware of the healing properties of music but in recent years research has thrown new light on the relationship between music and the medical and philosophical model of the Five Element system. Regimen is the outcome of this study, a collaboration between medical researchers and leading Chinese composers. Two long tracks offer sweeping melodies performed by The Shanghai Racial Music Troupe, featuring shimmering strings, soaring flute, piping reeds, massed lutes, tuned bells and assorted percussion. Designed to balance all five of the elements within the listener, Regimen is an uplifting album that does indeed have a calming and inspiring effect. Besides Regimen, there are additionally five other titles in the series, each addressing one of the five elements. The entire series may also be purchased in a box set. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, All Music Guide

Tenor Karim Sulayman and guitarist Sean Shibe present Broken Branches, a conceptual album with music ranging from Dowland, Monteverdi, Britten, Rodrigo, Takemitsu, Harvey, and Chaker to traditional songs from the Middle East, scrutinizing the close cultural and musical ties between East and West. This musical exploration ties in with the artists’ personal experience of a dynamic, in-between identity, as they grew up in the West having ethnic roots in the East (Lebanon and Japan respectively). Broken Branches explores the wood of the guitar and its relatives, as well as the splintering of history known as diaspora.

Zhao Jiping can be rightly considered as China's John Williams. Having made his reputation scoring some of the most popular arthouse films from China's Fifth Generation Filmmakers (including "To Live", "Ju Dou", "Farewell My Concubine", and "Raise The Red Lantern", Zhao achieved international recognition following the release of the CD "Electric Shadows" (2000). The present recording is a suite compiled from the incidental music Zhao composed for the popular historic drama "Qiao's Grand Courtyard." Stylistically, think Morricone at his sweetest, with a Chinese flavor. The suite has become quite popular in China and is frequently programmed on concerts.

At the beginning of their career, Level 42 was squarely a jazz-funk fusion band, contemporaries of fellow Brit funk groups like Atmosfear, Light of the World, Incognito, and Beggar & Co. By the end of the '80s, however, the band – whose music was instantly recognizable from Mark King's thumb-slap bass technique and associate member Wally Badarou's synthesizer flourishes – had crossed over to the point where they were often classified as sophisti-pop and dance-rock, equally likely to be placed in the context of Sade and the Style Council as was any group that made polished, upbeat, danceable pop/rock.
