Between the early Middle Ages and the thirteenth century, the great abbeys were key artistic centers and focal points of musical creation. From Santiago de Compostela to Saint-Denis, from Royaumont to Fontevraud by way of Mont Saint-Michel, the walls of these imposing edifices echoed with the finest voices in the medieval West. This anthology explores eight centuries of sacred music as it was celebrated in the great monastic houses of Europe.

At no time in recent history have architecture, urban planning, rehabilitation and reconstruction been as important to the Islamic world as they are today. With great opportunities to engender positive change and build better places for everyone, architects are responding to local challenges with understanding and innovation, with global outlook and vernacular and innovative forms. These multifaceted achievements include restoration, landscape design, infrastructure and urban planning, and new buildings.

The Diskantores ensemble, made up of four solid and cheerful musicians (two countertenors and two tenors), is here exploiting real polyphonic treasures from the Dutch Middle Ages, fragments of manuscripts kept in public libraries in Amsterdam, Leiden and Utrecht. Their provenance is uncertain, although the texts set to music are all in Dutch. These manuscripts have been damaged, mutilated and reused over the years, but the gaps in the manuscripts and some missing parts have been digitally reconstructed. These "Dutch Fragments" (Hollandse fragmenten) are touching by the clarity of their lines and by their history, which came close to complete destruction. These snippets of art and knowledge are multifaceted: pieces of a liturgical nature mingle with secular songs at a time when religion took precedence over everything else.

The live performance last year of this major and substantial work by the young Latvian composer Ešenvalds thrilled critics and audiences alike. As a new liturgical work that looks set to enter the repertoire it is comparable to Arvo Pärt’s Passio. Eschewing the single narrative perspective that characterizes the great Passion settings of the past, the composer has assembled an interlocking mosaic of texts from the gospels, from Byzantine and Roman liturgies, and from the Old Testament.

Sir Karl Jenkins is one of the most performed living composers in the world. The release of Karl’s new album Miserere: Songs Of Mercy And Redemption, on 11 October, will be followed by his 75th birthday concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 13 October. His new choral masterpiece Miserere is dedicated to all who have suffered or perished during the conflicts in the Middle East over the last 70 years. Karl was motivated by the desperate situation for the millions of people displaced and impacted by the cruel effects of war and hoped the healing and uniting powers of music could be used to bring together people from different religions.

This is an all-male vocal recording, including chant (Propers) and polyphony (Ordinary). The Mass of Tournai is early 14th century, a decade or so before that of Machaut. Some have argued that it does not show a unified design, and so Machaut's setting is the first unified mass cycle. The respective unities are not clear - at most it is a matter of degree - although it is not known whether this mass was composed by one composer or many. At any rate, it is the first mass cycle declared as such. The concluding Ite missa est leads into a true motet, with different texts in the two upper voices.
