This album concludes The Brahms Trio's five-volume survey of the piano trio in Russia with remarkable works by composers whose names have all but disappeared from the musical world's collective memory. Vladimir Dyck, a student of Widor at the Paris Conservatoire, took French nationality in 1910 but his life came to a tragic end when he and his family were arrested in 1943 and sent to Auschwitz. His Piano Trio, Op. 25 contrasts Russian soulfulness with the lightness and deft scoring he brought to his film compositions. Constantin von Sternberg's genial Op. 104 reflects his career as a virtuoso pianist, while Sergey Youferov's expansive and nostalgic Op. 52 is a farewell to the Russian 'Silver Age', a world about to be destroyed by revolution.

Anton Arensky (1861-1906) was a representative of Russian intelligence as it was growing through the late nineteenth century. His father was a doctor who played cello, and his mother played piano. Therefore, Anton started learning music at home. When he was 21 he ended his studies at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he developed his composition skills under the direction of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. He taught some of the great musicians who would follow his generation, including Sergei Rachmaninoff and Alexander Scriabin.

The Trio Lirico has programmed three composers who lived and worked on the Eastern side of the Iron Curtain until 1989: for Franziska Pietsch and Sophia Reuter this is music which - paraphrasing Goethe - they "search with their souls". "As children, we both lived in East Berlin and were close friends already", Franziska Pietsch explains about her violist colleague. "We therefore share personal history, a similar style of playing and a similar non-verbal way of communicating about this music. We just feel it."

With his physique alone Oscar Peterson radiated dominance, let alone with his performance. A Sun King on the piano, the absolute master of the trio, who – his co-musicians positioned behind his back – hardly needed any eye contact to convey his nonverbal stage directions. The short-lived trio together with George Mraz and Ray Price confirmed this impression even more than previous formations.

When Juraj Stanik asks you to write something for the sleeve of his new recording, you certainly don't say 'no'. In my case, bolstered by years of experience of his work, from the outstanding group 'Five Up High' through to his trio CDs like 'Shaken not stirred', 'Wow' and 'Inside out'. It always was and still remains a great pleasure to listen to Juraj. His playfulness with musical forms, his unexpected, funny but always controlled fantasies and that consistent, unmissable swing with his colleagues on bass and drums, all following the same groove. Jazz that I always regarded as a sort of homecoming.

Heinrich Schütz, Dieterich Buxtehude and J. S. Bach are considered the most important musicians and composers of their generations in Germany. Buxtehude was, for a long time, mainly renowned for his organ music, and it was only through the German musicologist and librarian Carl Stiehl's discovery of the Düben Collection in 1888 that his vocal music started to gain attention. His chamber music first came into focus during the 1970s, when research about the performance practices of early music started to be conducted on a larger scale, along with performances with period instruments. Buxtehude's trio sonatas now belong to the standard repertoire.
