Carla Olson & Mick Taylor - Too Hot For Snakes plus Music

L.A. roots-rocker Olson and British blues-rock guitarist Taylor made a powerful pair. This live album, recorded at the Roxy in Los Angeles in 1990, was their debut, waxed with a hand-picked band that had rehearsed for a week and played only one warm-up gig. It's a sign of the players' quality that the group sounds like a well-oiled road unit, with Olson's powerful, earthy vocals backed by a solid rhythm section of Rick Hemmert on drums and Jesse Sublett on bass, and sparked throughout by Taylor's brilliant electric guitar. Released in 1991 under this title in the U.S. and as "Live" in Europe, this two-CD reissue adds a Taylor-sung cover of Fred McDowell's "You Gotta Move," previously released in Japan, and an entire second disc of studio tracks picked from Olson's subsequent collaborations with Taylor.

Formed in Santa Monica as The Young Swingers, bassist Alan Brackett, singer/guitarist Jim Cherniss, drummer Spencer Dryden, singer/guitarist John Merrill and singer Barbara Robinson began playing local clubs and released two, now obscure, singles in 1965. By 1966 the band had opted on a name change to the Ashes, along with a change in personnel – original bassist Cherniss dropping out, while drummer Dryden quit in order to join The Jefferson Airplane. The band continued on, signing a contract with Vault Records that saw them release two unsuccessful 45s and within a couple of months Brackett and Merrill had abandoned the project, instead forming The Peanut Butter Conspiracy…

Allan Taylor is one of England's most-respected singer/songwriters. His songs have been covered by artists on both sides of the Atlantic, including Don Williams, Frankie Miller, Fairport Convention, Dick Gaughan, the McCalmans, the Fureys, the Clancy Brothers, and De Dannan. Folk Roots praised him for his "ability to crystallize a mood and evoke an era with the ease of a computer memory access, crafting perfect songs with dramatic changes in the spirit of Brecht, Bikel, and Brel." The Oxford Book of Traditional Verse felt as strongly, writing that Taylor was "one of the most literate and sensitive of contemporary songwriters in terms of words and music and one who is capable of exploring more complex subjects than most of his contemporaries." This is a most unusual LP due to the inclusion of Cecil Taylor on piano. Although Taylor and John Coltrane got along well, trumpeter Kenny Dorham (who is also on this quintet date) hated the avant-garde pianist's playing and was clearly bothered by Taylor's dissonant comping behind his solos.
